“…this DLC deserves some commendation.”
Car Mechanic Simulator has already done a grand job up until now when it comes to offering you the chance to see and work on the ins and outs of automobiles. Those who have played the game will know just how impressive the depth of its simulation can be, with every aspect designed down the the finest level with impeccable accuracy. If there was one thing the game may have been lacking, it was the ability to work on some real world classics. That just changed.
The new Car Mechanic Simulator 2015 – Mercedes-Benz DLC brings two legendary Mercedes-Benz cars to your garage; the 1954 300 SL Gullwing and the 560 SEC. Fans of the brand will no doubt rejoice upon simply hearing the names, but car fans in general will find a lot to appreciate in these new and exciting models for the game. At its time, the 300 SL Gullwing was the world’s fastest production car, as well as the first-ever production car to utilise fuel-injection. The 560 SEC on the other hand is beautiful to behold and delightfully powerful on the inside.
As with the other models in the game, you have the opportunity to examine, repair and drive the new Mercedes-Benz vehicles via your garage. No level of depth and definition has been sacrificed in including these first examples of licensed vehicles either, giving you a unique opportunity to get up close and personal to almost the real thing. For those players who are unlikely to get the chance to behold a real life version of these classics, this opportunity could be a dream come true.
There are a couple of downsides to the DLC however. Most notably it comes with a high price tag, perhaps due to costs of obtaining the rights for the use of the car models. Whatever the reason, it seems unlikely that anyone who isn’t already a big fan of these cars will be willing to pay almost £5 to obtain them for the game. However, even if you pay out for the extras you will need to do a fair share of work in-game to actually enjoy them too. You need at least 3500XP, plus without the $15,000 test track you can only find out the condition of parts by examining them individually. As cool a ride as these Mercedes-Benz models may be, actually getting your hands on them is almost as difficult as the real thing.
Despite the barriers that present themselves and the initial cost factor, this DLC deserves some commendation. It is the first example of a game of this kind gaining access to genuine production models of cars, which is an exciting development in itself. If this points towards the game’s future then that future is bright for car fans. The care and detail with which these models have been produced in this virtual world is also highly impressive. With the current growth of VR integration, there is a lot of potential for Car Mechanic Simulator to take these experiences even further in the future. As a step on the ladder then, the Mercedes-Benz DLC is a hugely significant one.
The Good:
- Impressive representation of two classic Mercedes-Benz models.
- The level of detail employed in producing the two new cars for the game is fantastic.
- Obtaining rights to genuine car models is a commendable achievement for the game.
- A particularly exciting addition for Mercedes-Benz fans.
- A strong sign of a bright future for the game.
The Bad:
- An expensive price point for a small DLC.
- In-game barriers make using and fully enjoying the new cars more difficult.
- Likely to only truly appeal to fans of these specific cars.
