Growing up in the 90s, you’d most likely have been exposed to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) in some form or another. Whether it was the comics or the animated TV series, TMNT firmly entrenched itself as a household name on a global scale.
The gaming side of the TMNT franchise delivered some truly spectacular titles over the years too and the Sega Genesis game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist, is the one that I played to death back in the day.
TMNT
Playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge therefore felt like I was reliving a part of my childhood. Everything from the Foot Ninja aesthetic to the sound effects and attacks are spot on here and Tribute Games Inc. have truly outdone themselves. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge being in their hands was definitely the right call. Thank you to the corporate gaming overlords who let this talented team develop this title. They’ve delivered above and beyond my expectations with regards to the gameplay and I say this as a TMNT video game fan.
Now diving right back into the game itself and why exactly it’s so good. Players will select their fighter and start the game’s story. You can play with up to 6 players total and the game is an absolute blast when played co-operatively with friends or family. This is a truly wholesome side-scrolling beat ’em up game at its finest.
The story of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge involves the turtles getting dragged into a fight with the Foot ninja clan and their associates once again. The story while formulaic serves its purpose. Don’t expect an epic tale here. It’s all about the battles with the Foot and Shredder’s minions. A lot of familiar characters are also present in the story and fans will love this.
Turtle Power!
Gameplay in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge involves some good old fashioned button combos. Players will be able to perform a basic combo attack with each character as well more complex attacks. Additionally, you’ll also have access to a “Special Gauge” which will charge as you beat up enemies. Once charged, you can let loose a special attack which does massive damage in an area of effect. This is indispensable in the game, especially when you’re surrounded by a group of enemies or facing off against a boss enemy.
Each level in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge is meticulously crafted with massive attention to detail here. The environments look amazing throughout and entire game has been masterfully created with levels being just the right length. There’s also a tonne of references to the old TMNT cartoon and the original voice actors from the 1987 TV series reprise their roles as the Turtles themselves. Whether you’re a newcomer to TMNT or an old fan, there’s a lot to enjoy here.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge features two modes of play. Story mode and Arcade mode. Arcade mode is played as if you were playing the game in an arcade with limited lives and less complexity. Plain and straightforward. Story mode on the other hand features collectibles and additional side content such as freeing NPC characters and then completing tasks for them.
While Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge is a rock-solid beat ‘em up game, players will be able to breeze through it in no time flat. The game is roughly about 3 hours long and doesn’t overstay its welcome. However, it does also have a lot of replayability since there are collectibles and other characters to try out. Some additional content such as more side-missions or a content museum showing off some TMNT history would have been nice to have here but alas this isn’t the case.
Graphically, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge looks incredible. The art style and the flashy effects are all visually pleasing and the environments are jam-packed with detail. The soundtrack of the game is just as good too.
Final Verdict
Overall, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is a beat ‘em up that fans of the franchise as well as newcomers can easily dive right into and enjoy. Playing the game co-operatively is the best part about the game as well as trying out different characters. If you can somehow manage to get 6 players together to play, the absolute chaos that ensues is sure to be insanely fun with each character letting loose their combos and special attacks against hordes of enemies. Despite the short length, this is a title that I can definitely recommend picking up because it’s so much fun to play and you’ll most likely end up replaying it multiple times. Grab a friend, grab Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge and go beat down some Foot ninja. It’s highly recommended.
