In the final round of the WTCR Esports series, Bence Bánki claimed victory in race one and 11th place in race two, securing him a third place finish in the championship. Teammate Néstor García finished 25th and 14th.
Racing at the Sepang Circuit, Bence started the evening well qualifying in pole position. Bence drove defensively for the entire first race, his opposition Baldi went for several moves but Bence was able to fight back and take the chequered flag in first place. Teammate Néstor qualified fifth, but found himself in traffic and the aggressive driving style of his rivals saw him drop down the order to 25th.
With the reverse grid start for the second race, Bence immediately found himself in traffic. He kept fighting although was never able to climb through the field and had to settle for 11th place. Néstor was able to claw his way from 25th to 14th where he crossed the finish line.
Bence commented on his race win,
“What a night! I knew I had little chance of winning the championship but third was still on the table. During qualifying I was able to make use of the slipstream on my fastest lap, which helped me clinch pole position. In the race, I had to outsmart the M1RA drivers who started just behind me. I pushed hard and resisted the pressure from Báldi. On the last lap, he pulled a move into turn one, but I didn’t allow him past. That sealed the victory – one of the most difficult wins in my career so far! In the reverse grid race, I couldn’t escape the chaos. I’m pleased to have finished third in the championship! I have to thank Néstor for his contribution, he had some bad luck, but he showed great speed tonight. We will keep on working together in the upcoming championships to bring home more wins for the Team.”
Néstor adds,
“It really seemed like a great start with Bence in pole position and me in fifth. Unfortunately, on the first lap, my car was impacted which damaged my car, sending me straight to last place. In the second race I managed to gain quite a few positions despite the typical chaos at the back of the grid. Once again, I want to congratulate Bence on his well-deserved victory.”
