Konami has announced, in conjunction with eFootball.Pro, that Scottish Premiership defending champions Celtic FC will join the two companies’ unique esports competition. The first-ever international esports league for professional football clubs only, Celtic is now the fourth club to join the league.
FC Barcelona, FC Schalke 04, AS Monaco and now Celtic FC make up the pioneering clubs who, with KONAMI and eFootball.Pro as partners, are looking to expand their presence in this growing area of sport.
Gordon Kaye Head of Business Development of Celtic FC said: “Following our partnership with Konami, creating a PES team to challenge for the inaugural eFootball.Pro title is an exciting first step into the evolving world of eSports and we look forward to competing against top international teams”.
Gerard Piqué, founder and president of eFootball.Pro added: “It’s great news that Celtic joins our competition. I have faced them several times as a player and I know that they will show in eSports the same integrity they display on the pitch. Having a club with so much history will give us the necessary values to make our league a model in the sector”
“I am excited to see this unique esports competition continue to grow and take shape, especially with a club as formidable and iconic as Celtic FC”, said Masami Saso, President of Konami Digital Entertainment B.V. “It is a privilege for KONAMI to work with organizations such as eFootball.Pro and Celtic FC who continue to drive the sport forward and create new derbies to excite for years to come”.
Founded in 1887, The Celtic Football Club competes in the top-flight Scottish league, the Scottish Premiership, and calls Celtic Park in Glasgow their home. Having won the championship title no less than 49 times, the Celts are looking to defend their title in this 2018/19 season and make it to 50.
Celtic FC will be represented by a professional team in the eFootball.Pro competition, which will compete using KONAMI’s football video game series, Pro Evolution Soccer. In this new league they will challenge FC Barcelona, FC Schalke 04, AS Monaco and other top-level clubs that will be unveiled soon.
