Hardcore gamers are often labelled as obsessive—and for good reason. A self-described ‘hardcore gamer’ probably logs hours playing their favourite game to improve. Like any pursuit, the only way to get better is to put in gruelling hours of experiential learning.
And like any gamer hoping to improve, they’ve probably heard the advice to play with elite players. The harder they push themselves in terms of competition, the quicker they’ll learn the ropes and develop their own strategies. Still, that doesn’t mean that they’re responsible for learning everything the hard way.
How many gamers had their minds blown when they finally reached out for help with Dark Souls… only to learn that their best bet at surviving many encounters wasn’t to defeat their enemies but simply to run away? Those pieces of pro advice can go a long way.
If you’re interested in learning a few pro tips, then start with some of the insights below. We’re covering a few of our favourite games, starting from the most casual to the most maddening.
Slots & RTP
While poker is often covered in headlines, slots are actually the world’s most popular casino game. Players gravitate toward slots because they’re exciting and dynamic, and include various ways to win with different bonus features. But are you familiar with RTP meaning and how it coincides with volatility?
RTP in slots refers to the ‘return to player’ rate, which shows what a player can expect to win based on what they bet. A good RTP is usually 95% and higher. But RTP is separate from volatility. Volatility in a slot covers how that RTP is distributed. High volatility means that a slot won’t pay out often—but when it does, it provides larger winnings. For this reason, you may want to target high or low volatility slots—but only those with an RTP over 95%.
Dota 2 & Junglers
As players approach a Divine 5 rating in Dota 2, it’s often a time when they switch up tactics in order to make the leap into the game’s upper echelons. But after sticking with other strategies for so long, many Dota 2 players aren’t sure what they need to change.
One suggestion for improving MMR is to stop choosing the role of jungler. The idea is that, once a player hits a certain level, they’ll be able to maintain form and levels better as a position hero. It also helps protect lanes, which gives the enemy fewer opportunities to exert pressure.
The Witcher 3 & Side Quests
The Witcher 3 has become one of the most successful games released in the last decade. In fact, it’s so popular that its in-game card game, Gwent, now has its own spinoff as a successful digital title. One of the reasons why The Witcher 3 is so popular is its long list of side quests.
Players have the chance to explore the open-world setting with these side quests—Gwent games included. But not all players will spend enough time exploring, accruing resources and experience. This will affect the game’s outcome later on—so be sure to notch at least half a dozen side quests early in the gameplay.
Cuphead & Health Upgrades
Cuphead has been celebrated (and decried) as one of the most difficult games released since Y2K hit. The fast-paced runner game requires players to think quickly and accurately. Not many will succeed… especially during their first sessions playing the game. Creators kept this in mind when creating a health upgrade, which players can access by purchasing a Heart in Porkrind’s Emporium.
But most pros who have finished the game advise against this… and they learned the hard way why buying health upgrades doesn’t help them. It is because it weakens the character’s attack—and there’s no way to advance in the game with a lacklustre attack.
Given how incredibly difficult Cuphead is, here’s one other piece of advice: don’t skip the Run & Gun levels. These are critical points where you can acquire coins, which you’ll desperately need down the line.
