There are plenty of controllers out in the wild to choose from, which can be used with your Console or PC, and one of those brands is the popular Gioteck. I have seen this brand in my local ASDA, TESCOS, ARGOS, PCWorld, SMYTHS and plenty more, but are they are good for the price they charge? let us find out.
So we have three variants to look at here all of which celebrate Fortnite Chapter 2, we have The Gioteck WX-4 Nintendo Switch arctic-camo version, which is wireless, and the VX-4 purple wireless and the VX-4 arctic-camo wired for the PlayStation 4. All of them can be purchased for £29.99 here.
To start I shall check out the new The Gioteck WX-4 Nintendo Switch arctic-camo version
See images below to check them out;
This controller features;
- Wireless Bluetooth
- Ergonomic design
- Standard Button Layout
- LED’s for Power and Player Number
- Motion and Vibration Support.
Just like any other controller, you will need to sync the controller to the Nintendo Switch which is rather easy, just hold down the Home and the Y button while you have the pairing screen active on your Nintendo Switch Once your device recognises your controller just press A and you are all done.
The next controller we have is the Gioteck VX-4 Purple Wireless for the PlayStation 4 for £34.99, which is five pounds more expensive when compared to the Nintendo Switch wireless version. You can purchase this controller from Argos here. Finally, we have Gioteck VX4 arctic-camo wired for the PlayStation 4 for £19.99 which you buy here, see images below;
Key features such as
- Wireless Bluetooth
- Ergonomic design
- Standard Playstation Layout
- 3.5mm audio headset port – plug and play
- Motion and Vibration Support.
When I first saw these it was not from the company that sent them to me, it was at my local superstore, they stood out really well even overshadowing the official controllers. As each of them showcases the controller on the front of the box, using the words Premium Wired and Premium Wireless as there core selling points. There is one thing Gioteck failed to use as another selling point ‘Fortnite‘ Inspired designed controllers, maybe because they would need to pay royalties to Epic and who wants to do that?
So from a selling point, Gioteck has done really well and have designed the packaging to a very high standard, paying particular attention to the controller’s core selling points and key features which gamers would want to know about. Everything is well packaged away and comes with a general instruction manual and a READ BEFORE USE card. Which simply tells you to check www.gioteck.com/fireware for any updates to the controllers.
These controllers feel really light at around 167grams, which is much lighter than the official controller’s, but light does not mean lacking in quality, as these do not. They feel premium with good quality materials being used offering great durability and comfort during those long gaming sessions.
The majority of the buttons offer a nice tactile bump when depressed which feel great when triggered, however, I did found the dot icons on the PS4 controllers a bit odd, especially since the square icon does not look like a square. I found that the D-pad was less responsive, in laments, terms did not offer much in travel distance, same goes for the L2 / R2 trigger buttons on all the controllers. I also felt that the L2 / R2 trigger buttons would break, but they did not even when I put a lot of force behind them.
All of the controllers offer all the buttons required to use for your systems, which is great, and they even come with a turbo button, if you want a little help along the way in that top-down frantic trigger happy shoot-em-up.
The addition of the 3.5mm audio connection on the Gioteck VX-4 Purple Wireless controller is a nice added feature and the sound that came through was perfect.
However, BE WARNED, not all features make there way down to the wired variant, this is why they are cheaper. You will lose motion control, vibration and the audio connection from the Gioteck VX-4 Purple Wireless controller. The wired controller also uses a cheap nasty rubber cable instead of a premium grade braided cable, this makes the wired variant feel less premium.
There was one thing I tend to moan about when it comes to third-party control pads. It is when they go out of their way and change the layout of the analogue sticks. I am happy to report Gioteck have kept all of these control pads inline with the official controllers. If they had not I would be recommending you to go find a different controller or purchase an official controller instead.
Keeping with the analogue sticks they feel amazing, rubber to touch which in turn offer a great grip during those intense battles while playing Fortnite or any other game. They even have a slight dip and bumps to improve your grip. I must admit Gioteck have done a fantastic job here when it came to designing these analogue sticks.
I personally played games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild and I loved the feel and the texture of the WX-4 Wireless controller. Features like motion control worked great and there was no lag to what I was doing with the controller to what was happening on the screen. The rumble is no HDRumble so in some games, you will not get the full experience from them, however, there are not that many games that use this feature so do not worry about it. If you have no choice you can just revert to using the joy-cons.
On the PS4 I played my favourite Horizon Zero Dawn and again I loved the feel and design of the VX-4 Wired and Wireless controllers, with motion and vibration working as expected, with no noticeable lag from input to screen animation. However, the lack of features on the VX-4 Wired variant, and the cheap cable, just made me want to throw it to one side, and never go back to it.
The battery life on both was relatively good and lasted some hours before they needed a charge, but I did find that The Gioteck WX-4 Nintendo Switch arctic-camo version was our performed by the Gioteck VX-4 purple wireless for PS4. There was also the lack of amiibo support for WX-4 Nintendo Switch and touchpad support for VX-4 purple wireless.
I did not expect much from these controllers, but I am surprised by how well they performed and the features they offer. When considering an official controller can cost around £59.99 and that’s just the official pro controller for the Nintendo Switch. Overall I feel these controllers come at a great price, will they be my go-to over my official controllers? I doubt it but if I was on a budget and needed a new controller asap and there was no way I could afford an official controller, then there is no reason why I would not be purchasing one of these.
If I had the choice between wired and wireless I would go for the wireless as these offer more features and for £29.99 for the Nintendo Switch Version and £34.99 for the Playstation 4 version, it is a bargain.
So with a starting price of £19.99 topping off at £34.99, you can not go far wrong. There are some features that I feel should be on the wired version or even the opportunity to purchase a more expensive version of the wired variant with more features. I would also add a braided cable and get rid of the horrid rubber cable.
You can find and purchase them all here if interested. The link is to Argos, but as I said at the start ASDA, TESCOS and other retail and online outlets also sell them, sometimes at a discounted price.
