Gunbrella: when science crosses the safety and protection you get from an umbrella and fuses it with a gun for…extra protection. You too can be Mary Poppins with a gun when you order the Gunbrella. You only have to pay 150 installments of 29.99 to own the Mk.II Gunbrella. Here’s how to order!
Swoop and Shoot
Gunbrella is a noir detective style Action, Adventure game developed by doinksoft and published by Devolver Digital. You play as Murray, a man out for revenge for the death of his wife and the kidnapping of his daughter. Journey through the different towns of Orville and Allentown to find the person who used that Gunbrella and get your daughter back. You’ll learn more about how to traverse the game with the Gunbrella and maybe learn a trick or two that’ll have you do some insane stunts on those who block your path for revenge.
When it rains, Cultists fall!
Getting off the boat with the tool that killed your wife, you traverse the land to exact revenge on the owner of the Gunbrella left behind. While traveling, you come across people wearing almost all red with a skull mask and discover the hard way that they’re not the friendliest types of people who shoot first and ask questions later. Leaving a small trail of blood behind and learning almost all the ins and outs of the Gunbrella, you reach a town outside of Orwell.
You can’t continue further without a train pass, which a man ranting about rats as one he’s willing to trade…for 3 rats. Going to the sewer to get some rats, but are met with a frog that fires bubbles that are the size of its own body. Collect the rats, pay the rat man for train pass and you’ll reach Orwell that has just gone on lock down because their mayor was kidnapped by the Cult 45. (Which bravo that the fact they named them after a pistol with a letter changed to stick with the gun theme.)
You come across some odd characters along the way to the cult’s hideout that you’ll either meet along the way or kill along the way. You will meet some unsightly creatures as well that are made from nature itself or the powersource known are crude.
UNLIMITED COVERAGE!!!!
While playing Gunbrella, I enjoyed the beautiful pixel art scenery that doinksoft created. The attention to the details done on the environments we visit, the creatures and characters that we encounter, the minimalist style of the UI and the crazy amount of blood that comes from either bodies destroyed by your Gunbrella, or just from myself dying countless times to certain bosses. (I’m looking at you, Nephew!) I know from the choices for the soundtracks used when picking them for each location, boss fights and situations were done with very cunning planning.
To even have moments of just pure silence happen makes you feel the lone solidarity that Murray is feeling as he walks to get to the answers he’s seeking. The sound selection for the firing of each bullet type and of the reloading of the ammunition that you have sound both accurate and slightly fulfilling. There were times when I’m speaking with a NPC or loading into a random area, that the game freezes for a moment and I couldn’t tell if it was because of my computer or just the game loading.
Gunbrella, the great and powerful Multi-tool
The mechanics behind how to use and utilize the Gunbrellais both unique and clever to me and maybe to the speedrunning community as well. Heck, if you’ve figured out the speed boosting capabilities you get with jumping and opening the Gunbrella, you can get across any map pretty quickly and sometimes even pull off a crazy lift once you’ve gotten the mechanics “covered.” The fast way to change not only your ammo, but what consumable you wish to take are beautifully done.
No longer do you need to go into your menu to just change the ammo type or eat a specific item, just use the correct button presses to just get to it whenever you need them for battle. You can even deflect bullets at enemies if you time the shot right to not only play the “I’m rubber, you’re glue” card on them. Especially if they’re a machine in a narrow hallway with no other chance of attacking back when all you have is a shotgun ammo.
With Gumbrella, you’ll always be covered
After spending almost 8 hours on my first playthrough, I was left with more questions than answers when it came to other choices I could have made or people I could have saved if I just choose another route. Because of my boundless curiosity when games give me choices that will affect the story, I plan to go back in and do a lot of things differently from the first and maybe even get all the achievements completed. If the story captivated you as much as it did me, I can see this game taking about 3 whole full runs to get everything the game has to offer done.
I never leave home without my Gunbrella
I enjoyed my time exploring this world with Murray and using such an amazing weapon to its almost fully calibrated form. I enjoyed the whole world that was created for Gunbrella, and was saddened when I reached the end of the game. My brain wanted more from this universe or at least a squeal if that’s even a possibility.
The atmosphere of the game gave me such a good feel of a noir detective that retired and is now back on the streets because someone forces his hand to be covered in blood again. If you want a fun game with some crazy interesting story, then Gunbrella is a game that I won’t mind revisiting a lot to get my slake of crazy maneuvering the battlefield in a fun manner and kill things in the process.
