John Joseph Kirby Jr. dies aged 79 from blood cancer after a long legal career with clients such as Nintendo, Pepsi, America Online and the Civil Rights division of the DOJ.
His successful defence of Nintendo’s “Donkey Kong” during a trademark and copyright infringement suit brought by Universal City Studios, led Shigeru Miyamoto to name the popular video- game character “Kirby” in his honor.
Nintendo also gave Mr. Kirby a $30,000 sailboat christened the Donkey Kong along with “exclusive worldwide rights to use the name for sailboats.”
