Just 4% of parents say they have appropriate insurance cover for their child’s phone, despite new research revealing children break or lose their phones 2.6 times on average.
The findings, from specialist insurance provider, Insurance2Go, also found that one in ten (9%) parents in London say their children have had their phones stolen. Outside of the capital, Southampton (8.8%) and Leeds (4.7%) have also seen high phone theft rates among young people.
Interestingly, 15% of parents in Southampton have insurance cover for their children’s phones, more than any other city. Whereas in London where thefts are highest, just 1.8% of parents have insurance for their children’s phones.
The top five UK cities where parents reported their children had their phones stolen are:
- London (9.1%)
- Southampton (8.8%)
- Leeds (4.7%)
- Birmingham, Cardiff (3.1%)
- Manchester (1.2%)
On the other hand, children of Belfast, Glasgow and Liverpool were the best at looking after their phones, having only lost or broken 1.9 devices since owning one.
Richard Gray, Head of Marketing and Digital at Insurance2go, comments:
“It’s always interesting to see the disparity across cities and regions.
“Our data shows that kids in London are most likely to have their phones stolen, yet just 1.8% of parents in the city take out insurance for their kids’ tech. Those in Southampton were found to be most likely to insure their children’s phones, but still only 15% of them.
“Smartphones are expensive pieces of equipment and naturally children can end up losing or breaking them no matter how careful they are, so it’s important to consider taking out insurance on these for peace of mind, and to eliminate the worry of having to replace the handset at full price should the worst happen.”
