I have been wanting to play a new First Person Shooter for a while now which wasn’t the usual Call of Duty 10 (copy and paste of modern warfare 9 and add some new maps and guns), so it led me to this little bad boy. This game isn’t like most first person shooters I have ever seen or played before. I kind of reminded me of Unreal tournament/Quake with how awesomely crazy and mental this game is. Every player is the same, has the same weapon, same health, etc and literally the aim of the game is to annihilate your opponents in the quickest rounds you will ever play in a FFS.
The game is simple you get put into maps that players have made themselves and go all out in an arena of death. The biggest game I was in was a 32 player game and some of the maps you play were just hell because there was so much going on at one time it has you on the edge of you sit literally screaming at you screen. There are two game modes one is team based and the other is just a massive free for all. The free for all mode is to simply kill the other players but it has a nice little twister to it if you catch my drift. If a player catches the pole in the middle of the map then a twister starts slowly moving in on the map and you are in the middle and every so often it will get smaller till you only have a little area to fight in – this might sound rubbish but believe me its unbelievably fun. The team base mode is where you have to capture the enemy team’s pole and earn points that way. This mode is also really good. This game has brought rage and happiness to me many a times.
Game play
Every player is the same; each will have four ammo in their gun and has the same amount of stamina. If you get shot twice you die but if the pole hasn’t been captured you come back but with only one life this time. The game seems to make you think before doing. Seeing as you only have two lives you can’t just go into the game guns blazing because you only have four bullets, the bullets slowly reload after time. I think this is a good idea because that way a player can’t just spam gun fire towards other players you have to try and use skill and the surrounding map to help you out. The making of your own maps is really good as well. The interface is very easy to find your way around and finding the right assets to put into your map. You can make them as complex as you like which is sweet if you know what you are doing. Then once you have finished your maps you can take them to the internet for other players world wide to try them out and see what they think, if players like a map as well you can donate points to them to say that you like a players map to get them more notice on the game so that everyone has a chance to play it. Games can go on for ages but most of them go on for like five minutes max depending on how many players you have in game and depending on the map size. A few problems that I came across were that some servers are very laggy and just make it impossible to play this type of game because of how fast paced it is and also when it comes to connecting to some games it seems to take ages to actually connect to and for the game mode to load. Another thing I notice is if other players you are playing against have a better internet connection than you they spawn before you, which means that they have a upper hand against you which in all fairness hasn’t lead to me die but might do in the future if players clock on to it.
The Positives and Negatives
+ Brilliant unique FPS
+ Play in player made maps, so every level is different (very rare you play the same map twice)
+ Games can go really quickly, so your not waiting around for long
+ Build you own maps to your own style and liking
– Takes ages connecting to some servers
– Players can spawn before you
The Score
This game is like no other FPS I have played before, in my own opinion I would say that It is up there with Call of Duty on terms of how fun it actually is. It might not have different weapons that you can use to your advantage but the game makes you feel better than anything when you see yourself be the last one standing when there is 32 players in one server. There are some bad features to the game but I think they only occurred because of my internet connection and speed so they might not even be relevant. The game prices at £15.99 and I’m not going to big it up because the game does that itself. It is honestly worth every penny and every minute I spent playing it. One of the best games I have reviewed so far. For these reasons Shootmania Storm gets an extraordinary 5/5.
