With three days’ worth of screams still echoing around the halls of Cologne’s Koelmesse, Billy Goat Entertainment is proud – and just a little bit humbled – to announce Supermarket Shriek picked up Ukie’s Best of Show award at Gamescom 2018 last week.
The game – which offers players the chance to work together to come out on top in the most bizarre kart racer on the planet, controlling a man and his goat with their voice as they fly around a supermarket in a shopping trolley – was one of titles on show on the Ukie stand all week, taken on by games industry peers and media alike.
However, when the time came for Ukie to reveal the best game on the UK stand, Supermarket Shriek came out on top.
“Supermarket Shriek is simple but brilliant fun,” offered Seth Barton, editor of MCV and the person tasked with awarding the accolade. “It’s a perfect showfloor game in that it grabs you immediately with its straightforward, yet tricky to master, control system, ludicrous concept and colourful presentation. While the added ‘Shrieky mode’ as I call it, provides an additional option for party play.
“Supermarket Shriek has the potential to capture a big audience and its loud-mouthed protagonist pair deserve to complete the circle and become memes in their own right. If the PR campaign doesn’t involve a real man and a goat in a shopping trolley going around a supermarket then I’ll be very disappointed.”
For Billy Goat Entertainment director William Barr, who showcased Supermarket Shriek both on the Ukie stand and on the Indie Arena Booth in Gamescom’s consumer halls, the award was the perfect way to round off a successful week.
“Supermarket Shriek is a game we’ve found easier to demo than describe. We’re confident there isn’t anything quite like it out there, probably for good reason! Given the option most players at Gamescom opted to use controllers as opposed to microphones it has to be said, but the reception was better than we could have hoped for. Our queue wasn’t quite as long as Battlefield’s but there wasn’t a moment somebody wasn’t crashing around one of our supermarkets, often with a friend and appearing to enjoy it,” added Barr. “That Ukie saw fit to name us as the best game on the stand really is the icing on the cake, which you can find in the bakery isle next to the giant buzzsaws and flame pits.”
In development for console and due for release in Q1 2019, Supermarket Shriek will be available to play again at PAX West in Seattle as part of the Xbox Booth, August 31st – September 3rd:
