Perhaps you met your partner in a social situation, such as a singles bar or nightclub? In this day and age, it’s increasingly likely you met on a date site, as virtual matchmaking is a topic growing in popularity all the time. Dating websites like this are an excellent place to connect, but the time will come when online messages are not enough – you’ll want to indulge in offline activities, too. Couples are always on the lookout for stimulating and exciting ideas for date night. Computer games are an obvious distraction for couples, one that is more popular than going to the movies. But if you’re truly looking for something a little outside the box, how about competing against a much wider field of contestants? This is where MMORPG come into their own. Here are some of the most recommended games for you to play as a couple.
World of Warcraft
Released as far back as 2004, this is the fourth installment in this enduring series of multi-player online role-playing games. A decade after release, World of Warcraft had registered over 100 million player accounts, a testament to the game’s brilliant inventiveness. It’s ideal to play as a couple because you can choose which characters (avatars) to roam the fantastical landscape, taking on all manner of monsters, including the minions of the Old God N’zoth. Signing up to the Alliance or the Horde, a world or adventures awaits, with mythic dungeons to venture into, and fabulous rewards to be competed for.
Elder Scrolls
Another immensely popular MMORPG game for couples, Elder Scrolls boasts a worldwide gaming membership of more than 13 million. The fictional universe here is the continent of Tamriel, the landscape combining Ancient Roman-like elements, combined with some technology, magic, and mythological animals of all shapes and sizes. You and your partner can seize the controls and explore Tamriel’s frozen wastelands, dedicated to the quest of thwarting the powerful Vampire Lord from enslaving this realm. Tamriel is sub-divided into various provinces, each with their character. You’ll encounter elves, orcs, and many other weird and wonderful creatures.
Tera
Tera is a game that will test your ability to master combat skills. You can choose your character from one of the seven races and 13 classes of the Valkyon Federation, with each race having specific characteristics. This allows a degree of fine-tuning with your character’s traits and skills, enabling you to develop your prowess as you set about battling your enemies. You can take advantage of the game’s real-time battle sequences, incorporating third-person camera POVs, targetting enemies with cross-hair cursors.
Eve Online
Eve Online is an awesome space simulation game, allowing players to take to over 7,800 star systems in sleek craft, and get involved in everything from piracy to trading, exploration to combat. Huge in ambition and scope, Eve Online featured ‘The Bloodbath of B-R5RB,’ a 21-hour battle between the Clusterfuck Coalition and Russian Alliances, involving thousands of online players congregating in a single star zone. This was recognized as one of the largest multiplayer battles in gaming history.
Lord of the Rings
Unless you’ve been marooned on a desert island, you’ll likely be aware of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy world, Middle Earth, as featured in books, animation, and Peter Jackson’s sweeping trilogy. This world of plucky hobbits, regal elves, and irascible dwarves battling demon sorcerers and their dark armies of trolls and orcs is perfect for gaming, as this award-winning version demonstrates. Here you can immerse yourself in the epic adventure, keeping yourselves up to date with developments and new release information by following online bulletins.
Aion
This is another game where a couple can sink their teeth into acquiring skills. Again, you select your character from the outset, choosing from six primary classes: Warrior, Scout, Mage, Priest, Technist, or Muse. The incentive you have is that once you progress to level 10, you get the opportunity to choose from two specialized classes. As you progress through the game’s various trials and tribulations, you must learn to perform certain actions in order – or chain. The further along this chain you progress, the more powerful these attributes will become. The action revolves around combat zones – fortresses – inside the Abyss and Balaura. Rather than simply getting involved in tit-for-tat battles, the role-play can involve all sorts of in-depth planning, with funding from taxes deciding whether the best siege implements can be brought to bear. There are other complicated rules to master, incentivizing play. Only a limited number of the highest-ranking players can compete for a limited number of rank positions. During battles, the higher ranking the opponent you kill, the more points you will accumulate.
Black Desert
This engaging MMORPG game revolves around two nations at war with each other – the Kingdom of Valencia, a spiritual monarchy, and the Republic of Calpheon, which is much more materialistic. The backstory is that these countries once co-existed in harmony, only for the land to be consumed by a plague spread by Valencian merchants. This pestilence caused widespread death, with many others exiled from the land amidst the climate of paranoia. In the aftermath of all this, mistrust and war erupted between the rival realms.
This miniature universe becomes the compelling backdrop where players can get involved in everything from fishing, agriculture, and trading to the inevitable combat when you come across someone from the enemy side encroaching on your interests. As well as the day-to-day activities, there are also battles and sieges, enabling players to develop different aspects of their characters – and this is the aspect of Black Desert that has drawn particular praise from reviews. The ability of players to inhabit fully-formed and three-dimensional characters, with complex drives and aspirations, sets is above many of the more traditional multi-player games. In combat, players can deploy aiming and evasion skills, engaging in a variety of modes. You can even attempt mounted combat, although there is a catch. You need to capture your animals in the wild and tame them – an apt metaphor for mastering gameplay.
