The Sole Supplier reveals that PlayStation is one of the biggest brands for collabs this year despite being one of the most difficult consoles to get hold of. The gaming giant has turned to streetwear with its latest collab, a Balenciaga x PlayStation capsule collection, which has seen an incredible 1330% surge in demand following the release yesterday.
For context, PlayStation 5 saw a 308% spike in demand for its release last year. More recently, it caused an 8,900% surge in interest following the announcement of the upcoming PlayStation 5 sneaker collab with Nike.
Featuring two T-Shirts in red and black hues as well as a black hoodie, each piece is adorned with the classic PlayStation font and graphic as well as a signature Balenciaga logo. The print is featured on both sleeves as well as the front and rear of the garment with the “nov 2020” date making an appearance on each piece.
Interestingly, the products themselves cost more than the console with the T-shirt’s priced at £495 ($675) and the hoodies at £650 ($875), while the console costs around £449 ($499).
The PS5 is one of the most difficult consoles to get hold of right now, despite almost 8 million units being sold since launching in November 2020. If the demand for the Balenciaga collection is anything like that of the console they’re based on, we expect the products to have a very high resale value.
PlayStation sneakers reach $100 MILLION resale value, will the Balenciaga collection see the same? 
The five pairs of PlayStation x Travis Scott x Nike Dunk Low released as a promotional sneaker around the PlayStation 5 release have reached resale prices of $100 million for a size US12 on StockX (April 2021). As the Balenciaga collection has a lot more stock available, it is unlikely that we will see resale reach the millions however it is possible that resale prices will see a dramatic increase thanks to the PlayStation brand.
The PlayStation 5 itself is reaching upwards of £800 ($1000) on resale sites such as StockX, suggesting that any PS5 related products could see the same attention.
