Universe Sandbox is developed and published by Giant Army and is more of an application than a game. A toy to mess with, allowing you to fiddle with power far beyond your imagination. The game is a complex simulator that allows the player to look at the universe on a whole new level, up close and personal.Players can change the existing variables on planets, moons and the sun in our own solar system, destroy it and then move to the next. The game also allows you to spawn your own Solar system and show it to your friends at how pretty and amazing your creative skills would be compared to big man upstairs.
The creative destruction does not end there though; the game allows you to manipulate entire galaxies. You can crash them together or see how long the process of a galaxy close to ours takes to collide if we speed time up and change a slight variable in our galaxy. Not everything has to be done on a large destructive scale however. You can test your own theories like … What would happen to the solar system if the Sun went supernova or what would happen if Pluto was the size of the sun?
The game has a series of tutorials to teach the basic tools and what each one would affect. Unfortunately there is no tutorial on the advanced tools, creating a series of trial and error scenarios in which nothing goes right. There is also a lack of explanation as to when a player screws with some variables. There is no explanation as to why Pluto just went and made a hole in the side of Jupiter when I changed its mass to 2 times the size it is now.The game gets regular updates adding more for each player to destroy and manipulate.
The graphics in Universe Sandbox are great, allowing players to zoom in and see the sizes shapes and actual effects some mishaps can have on the universe. Sadly the detail is not enough to have large holes in the side of planets were you have just crashed a moon, a white spot is left instead.
Overall the game is a fun mind boggling event that allows you to play god and learn some interesting things while doing it.
