If there’s one thing I like, it’s JAPAN and the never-ending burst of weird ideas and this is no exception. The successor to the previously released titles Gal*Gun and Gal*Gun Double Peace is now one of my most crazy yet entertaining experiences that has got me going for more. While there is no doubt that the game itself is a bit too perverse for the general audience to the point you might even want to shut yourself in a closet to even play such games, I have to say it’s a fairly decent rail shooter game that has its quirks along with the premise to find your true love while doing your daily rounds for capturing demons that lurks your school and causing havoc to your female classmates and teachers.
If you can find the enjoyment or forget about the creeping eyes around you as you play the game whether on the go on your Nintendo Switch or even just in your living room with your Playstation 4, ITS BLOODY WORTH IT! The time I spent trying to get my chosen girl while feeding her a bunch… and I mean A LOT of chocolates on a daily basis was worth a lifetime as you get rewarded with an ending that feels just right.
As the main protagonist of the game, you get blessed with the VR headset and VR aim controller… uh?! I mean Pheromone Goggles and Pheromone Gun which does pretty much as their name implies. Goggles that produces an aura that makes all the girls go batshit crazy over you… from shouting a confession, handing over love letters just like what you’d expect from high school themed anime or even going a level higher as to push you down to the ground while stepping over your little… well let’s not get too deep in that okay? Then the gun that could put your target into ecstasy! You, the protagonist gets accompanied by an angel named Risu which is sent by Angel Ring Company (AR Co for short) and gets briefed about your task and the deadline to meet your quota. Alongside the new angel character, you get introduced to your childhood friend Nanako which sits beside you at school as well as the twin-tailed shut-in neighbor Chiru which you get to talk to once you’re home from demon busting and pheromone shooting.
What I do love about the game is the VR-esque setting along with the cel-shaded graphics which is a staple on most Japanese-made games. Its cute, its interesting, and it gets to my weakspot. And speaking of weakspots, each girl has their designated weakspots at which you’re supposed to shoot during the missions or just simply shoot like a madman on steroids until they fall to their knees in pleasure, your choice! While it is an interesting rail shooter, the only thing I find wrong with it is the repetitiveness and lack of a real challenge to the game in its entirety. I feel myself just breezing through the missions up to the end without any specific mechanics to make it a little more unique than what I’ve done for like the first few minutes of the mission. Being stationary and having simplistic controls to either crouch, tiptoe, or peek left and right feel a little less useful as most of the time it doesn’t exactly put you in a position that you necessarily feel the need to do so. While there are a few modes on missions from defending girls, to shooting them silly, maybe finding lost items, or to even something like a naughty exorcism, it wasn’t enough to get me hooked enough to do more without resting every few run-ins. As well as the boss fights felt more repetitive without much variation from the previous ones you’ve faced so far. Definitely something that needs to be polished in the next instalment, IMHO!
So at this point, I’m not exactly sure if the game is catered to be a decent rail shooter or a fan-service game with sexual themes for their specified audience. While I like the mix of both worlds some might not agree with both so it’s a bit of a shame… maybe with a bit more polish to the already fun gameplay while adding some more unique mechanics to the missions would give this a gold standard in my book and hopefully on yours.
While the shooting elements require much more thought, I got deeply hooked in with the story… at least the middle part up to the end, as it has a fairly weak start and I couldn’t find the link to put me on gung-ho mode to even help the angel Risu. But after a bit of time, it started to sink in and I was able to fully support what’s going on while giving Nanako and Chiru some much deserve love. An interesting yet laid back story which I happen to really like ever since I played a Neptunia game, while I do miss the 4th wall breaking scenes, the game itself doesn’t fall short to being as interesting as the other.
The controls however work pretty well with the PS4 controller as it gives you the ability to use the motion controls to aim while also letting you control it with the left stick simultaneously or picking one or the other. And if that wasn’t enough you could also use the left and right buttons on the directional pad to rotate your view either left or right for a much easier turning around with its 360 degree-based shooter mechanics along with my previously mentioned comment on the control features of crouching, tiptoe and peeking. The control mechanics are well-thought out despite the simplistic missions available in the game.
All in all, the game has its quirks and letdowns plus the sexual themes that could probably pique your interest or simply make you walk away. With a decent story to boot it up, it’s one of those dating games that felt a little more interesting especially that it has a full 3D world at which you can look around and a few things like books, pencils, balls or even statues that can be interacted to despite how useless they seem to be within the world. Definitely not the best story but it works. Doesn’t have the hook-in factor when it comes to the shooter genre but it decent. And definitely a worthy contender in my weird game list now and forever!
And as a side note, please don’t try this at school unless you’re a main protagonist! Since you’re most likely be labeled as a pervert going through vents towards the girls’ changing room and showers or the fact that the protagonist ends up going in the girl’s bathroom in search for demons.
