The medieval setting is one that is rarely done, and outside of strategy games as well, but with Chivalry medieval warfare we got a fantastic multiplayer game, with melee based combat and plenty of weapons. It seemed to be a direct competitor with War of the roses, but both going in different directions, chivalry being more arcadey and War of the Roses being more serious, plus chivalry has a dedicated scream button which is always fun. Chivalry was a surprise hit with over 1.2 million sales, all fighting for the two virtual sides indefinably, enjoying a free weapon and map DLC and plenty of free weekends to practice my maul skills on new players faces.
Now nearly a year after its original release we get a full-fledged expansion pack, Chivalry Medieval warfare: Deadliest warrior, apart from being a little bit of a mouth full it adds 6 new playable classes and a host of new levels. As the title of the expansion would suggest, this expansion focuses on those warriors who have been paraded around for all of history as being the most fearless, powerful and downright legendary.
First class up is the Ninja, best known as agents of stealth and trickery, here they are the class with some of the fastest weapons, and also have the ability to blind there foes with smoke, allowing them to quickly get in and get the kill or make for a fast get away. They are also able to do a roll to get away from a swing, and follow it up with a counter swing, allowing some very unpredictable movements, or again allowing them to quickly leave the battle. Adding this with having the fastest movement speed in the game makes these great for hit and runs, though there bo Staff right now is a little overpowered hopefully this will be tweaked in time.
Next is the Knight, he basically the same as those from chivalry as we all know, he is the knight class so he has the big clunky armour, you can choose your swords and halberds, and cross bows, which allows you to take some long rang kills. The Knights are also much better armoured than anyone else, allowing them to take a much bigger beating that the other classes that are available, the downside is that they are also very slow, so be mindful of this when playing.
The rum swigging, ship boarding, blunderbuss firing scourge of the sea is next, pirates come up with their mix of long and close range weapons, armed with shivs and boarding axes allowing very close range kills. These are also the only class armed with black powder weapons, being a blunder buss, a medium range shot gun, and a black powder pistol that can hit from quite the distance, but there long loading times and quite mediocre damage makes them not used too much right now. Pirates also have a special taunt, allowing them to swig a bottle of rum becoming momentarily drunk, allowing them to ignore damage for a short time after being hit.
The most well-known of all the romans with the biggest beards are up next, the Spartans, with shield and spear in hand, and I suspect having the strongest kick knock back in the game for obvious reason. With shield in one hand allowing them to constantly take attacks, and long range spears make these deadly in one on one, there javelin’s which allow them to both melee attack and throw at range, though are slow to ready up, can cause serious damage.
Next are the terror of most of the Scandinavian people, the raping, pillaging Vikings join the battle, with battle axes to the ready, these hardy warriors enter the battle with shield and axe looking to cause some serious damage. They are also the only class that can duel wield two weapons at once, allowing them to keep up a barrage of attacks to defeat there foes, and also throw there shield like some Frisbee, which can if hit in the head cause some serious damage or kill an unprepared foe.
Finally the warriors from the far east, the Samurai, armed with Katana, pikes, bows and…extra-long Katanas, though there weapons will find it hard to penetrate the armour of the knights, it will have an easy time against more lightly armoured targets such as the ninja. With spear and bow it allows the samurai to be both lethal at long and close range, though there swings are quite slow, well placed hits will easily cleave off body parts of some of the other fighters.
Along with all these fantastic new classes’ new game modes are also here, multiplayer team death matches seem to be the most popular at the moment, pitching each of these different classes together, some 3 teams of 6 against each other, each team being only one class. Other new modes are slowly being added but most are just ones from Cheverly base game such as duels, though I would be very excited if they brought back some older modes such as capture the flag
If you have played Chivalry you will be aware of the levelling up system, get kills with weapon of a certain class, to unlock the next weapon of that class, so you won’t be surprised to find out that the same is here too. What is new however is the ability to change your characters appearance by ranking up, the further you do you can add accessories to each of the classes such as shoulder pads and what not, you can also change how there chest and helmet design is like as well.
Deadliest warrior is an expansion that focuses on new playable classes and less of anything else, it adds a lot of new gameplay mechanics and a fair amount of maps, the graphics haven’t changed much either, this is a great DLC update for the franchise.
