Blackjack is one of the many games that has a huge reputation around the world and is widely considered an all-time classic for anyone who enjoys playing a card game. Indeed, whilst it is traditionally considered a casino game, many have adopted it as one that they can play with friends simply for fun.
Blackjack is incredibly popular all around the world that millions and millions of people continue to play it on a regular basis as they head to platforms such as 777 casino online where they can get authentic experiences right from the comfort of their homes or from anywhere in the world if they are unable to get to a traditional casino establishment.
What are the origins of the game, though? Why did Blackjack become so popular? Let’s take a look at a brief history about one of the biggest games the world has ever seen and played!
Origins
Unfortunately, there would appear to be some debate about where and when Blackjack was created, with some suggesting a number of different historical periods in which the game was invented. One idea that is widely accepted by researchers, though, is that the game had likely originated in France and was being played in casinos within the country around 1700.
The French cards at the time were called “Vingt-et-Un” and this translates to “Twenty-one” in English. It is also believed that the cards had likely been derived from the card game Chemin de Fer, which was highly popular at the time. This card game was played during the reign of King Louis XV and at the French Royal Court.
As mentioned, there is some debate about the origins of Blackjack, with one theory suggesting that it was an invention that had been created by the Romans. This theory stands because of the idea that the Romans loved to gamble, although there is no evidence to have supported it. Furthermore, it has been suggested the game had been played with wooden blocks that had numbers painted on them at the time, rather than paper cards.
American adopting saw the game become incredibly popular
The level of popularity that Blackjack has in the modern world could be down to the fact that it made its way to American shores in the 18th century following the arrival of French colonists. As it could not expand in France until the following century, it had evolved in America with it becoming a game that was playable in legalised casinos within New Orleans in 1820. Since then, the rules have also been altered and gone through a handful of changes.
Another reason the game had managed to become popular in America was down to Eleanor Dumont. She was a French lady who had immigrated to America and was a skilled card dealer who decided to travel around before opening up a gambling hall in Nevada City, California, which would be named Vingt-et-Un. People from all over the country would visit and play against her.
Blackjack as we know it today
It was not until the 20th century that the game finally became known as Blackjack. Prior to this, some had known it as “21” due to the game’s objective of trying to obtain a hand that has a total of 21.
The name had only stuck as casinos had looked to try and attract new players to continue to play “21” at the time, as many of them had provided offers that included paying extra if a black jack playing card had been dealt alongside an ace of spades.
