The independent Czech studio – CBE Software invites you to a journey that will test your willpower and courage, while you’ll be forcing your way through the unexpected in the story of Someday You’ll Return. The team’s narrative driven game was greatly appreciated in this year’s prestige gaming contests and also managed to receive renowned grants, beating many other world class projects.
Hard work pays off
The development process of Someday You’ll Return was mainly self-funded by the two-man team behind the game. CBE Software got support by the Creative Europe Program and Epic Games. The Unreal Engine maker secured the additional funding of the game by honoring the team with the Unreal Dev Grant which was established to give a boost to the most promising and creative Unreal projects. This round was especially varied, ranging from VR projects to healthcare tools, AI-driven educational platforms and story-driven video games like CBE’s title.
Someday You’ll Return received numerous awards on this year’s renowned gaming events. It was granted “Game of the Year” on Reboot Develop 2018 being also honored for its Visual Excellence and was nominated in the Outstanding Gameplay category. The game was awarded for the Best Art on Game Access 2018 and White Nights St. Petersburg 2018’s Indie Game Cup. At the latter it also received nominations for the Best Storytelling and was one of the Grand Prix Award nominees.
Czech it out
Someday You’ll Return takes place in beautiful scenic areas of the Czech Republic. While they are not exact duplicates, CBE Software tried to capture the atmosphere of Bohemian nature. The team places well-known landmarks into a virtual map, which are discoverable by players and which the team personally visited many times in their life. Anyone can grab their backpack and hike there. The game also includes QR codes that can be scanned with the phone to reveal a point on the real-life map.
The typical Czech forest setting, used as a reference, is quite different than Scandinavian or American-inspired vantage points presented in other games. It creates a unique ephemeral mood which seems unfamiliar and unsettling. The developers also did implement the famous Czech tourist navigation system dating back to the end of the 19th century.
Someday You’ll Return will be out on PC sometime in 2019, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One releases are planned as well. More of the intricate features of the game will get revealed in the following months. Stay tuned as ancient Moravian forests hold many stories to be told and secrets to be revealed.
