It’s time to go on holiday to a quaint little village of eccentric, mostly peace-loving Gauls in Asterix & Obelix Slap Them All 2. Never mind that the village is surrounded by Romans that just can’t seem to do their jobs right. Or that Caesar usually has headaches and nightmares about these particular Gauls. It’s a perfect place to sightsee and taste the local cuisine and if you get into trouble, those mighty warriors Asterix and Obelix, and fierce little Dogmatix too, will be there to help you out.
So let’s take a jaunt back into the endearing world of Asterix and Obelix with Asterix & Obelix Slap Them All 2, the sequel to, obviously, Asterix & Obelix: Slap Them All. And who are we slapping? Well just about everyone really. Because Asterix & Obelix Slap Them All 2 is 2D beat-em-up of Gaulish proportions. Romans, Pirates, lend me your ears! And step right on up because we have enough slaps to go around!
Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo’s endearing comic series, Asterix & Obelix, has been capturing the hearts and laughter of the young and old for generations. This timeless series of comics and heroically humorous exploits stands up as well today as it ever has. Developer Mr Nutz Studios has managed to translate the comic’s visuals, style and feel to the videogame format perfectly.
Asterix & Obelix Slap Them All 2 is a visual masterpiece of 2D animation and design. The visual looks of the comics are recreated perfectly here, from the character designs to the locations and the combat. Everything looks as though it were lifted directly from the source material, with the developer’s love for it shining through. Whether it’s the nods to various locations, stories or characters from various issues tucked away in the background, Asterix & Obelix Slap Them All 2 is a labour of love.
The 2D animation quality is mind-blowing and easily on par with a high-budget television series or movie. In motion, it’s a thing of pure beauty from the way both Asterix and Obelix move, to the pile-ups that occur in combat and to all the comic sound effect bubbles that pop up when someone takes it on the chin. That splendour isn’t reserved only for our heroes though, the same care and attention to detail is applied to everything else. It really does look like a comic panel come to life.
Even more amazing is that the game doesn’t buckle with all the sprites on screen. There can be upwards of twenty sprites and there’s not a hint of any performance issues whatsoever. The game runs smoothly and flawlessly.
Asterix & Obelix Slap Them All 2 plays like any beat-em-up you’ve ever played. The developers haven’t tried to innovate in the genre, instead relying on tried and true design to keep the action going across its whopping twenty-one levels.
Asterix and Obelix sport their own sets of moves, combos and specials making them feel very different to play with. Obelix feels heavier and slightly slower while Asterix is smaller and faster. Both our heroes pack a punch. Signature moves for our heroes, and therefore signature beatdowns for the enemies, are also here. Position yourself correctly and you can mow through enemies in large groups.
It’s very satisfying to use comic moves, such as when Asterix charges through a line of Legionnaires and sends them skyward with lances, shields and helmets flying. Even more impressive and fun is that the enemies can collide with each other so you can knock them down like bowling pins, creating wonderful pile-ups all over the place.
In solo mode, players can switch between Asterix and Obelix with the press of a button but there’s also a local co-op mode you can engage in. And let’s be honest, beat-em-ups are more entertaining with another player in on the fun.
Asterix & Obelix Slap Them All 2 may not have a variety of play modes, but it does pack a high score counter along with three difficulty settings. If there’s any issue with the game, it would be that our heroes don’t sport a large enough move set to add more depth and variety to the game.
Asterix & Obelix Slap Them All 2 may not have a ton of depth to it but that doesn’t stop it from being a good time. Fans of the comics and 2D animation will adore the love and artistry put into the game while beat-em-up fans can enjoy another quality brawler to keep them entertained.
