Cubemen 2 Review

I was looking for a game to play and thought why not look for something different, then I came across Cubemen 2 and oh my god is this game awesome. It’s like a tower defence game but with an epic twist. There are so many levels to play through and if you finished the levels in the campaign you can just build you own unique levels to play in or even download other player’s maps from around the world. The game keeps you constantly on the ball to try and protect your little base. You have units that will defend the on coming enemies and can move freely which is different because this isn’t like other tower defence games because your towers can move and set up defence positions to stop the enemies destroying you base in any way you can.

Cubemen 2 is a really fast paced tower defence game that allows you to control little cubemen to defend your base against enemies. For people who love multiplayer games you can play with up to 6 players whether it is against AI or other players. You can also make you own levels and maps with their own theme too so you can carry on the awesomeness of the game after you complete the campaign. It’s very easy to make levels and you could probably knock one out in a few minutes. You can test the level will making it and the interface is so easy to follow. There are 7 different units in the game each with their own unique skill whether it be using a pistol or shooting freeze lighting to kill the enemy units. It’s a simple click and move system that allows the player to move their units to the position where they want them to be so you can defend against the on coming storm.

Game play

The game is really simple to play; click on the base to select a unit, then click on the map to send your unit to that location. The only problem that I found with this is some of the levels are really cramped so once you have sent your unit to his location and then you select another unit trying to reselect the previous unit can be quiet hard and annoying. Also the camera can be hard to use, navigating through some of the maps was hard because I would have sent a unit to a place but then couldn’t select him again with the mouse because the camera wouldn’t get luckily though they have a short key on the keyboard that scrolls through all the units you have but this can be a pain to if you have a lot of units.

I love the way you can customise the levels and units to your liking so it adds that extra edge to the game. You can also download other players’ maps from around the world and they can download yours if you have made any.

Online was quite bad for the reason that it took ages for me to actually find a game, this might be to do with my connection, I’m not sure, but it took 20mins to find one but when I played online it was awesome. I have never really experienced online like I did with this game, it was really tense all the time. You can also see how you performed on the levels on the world rankings and also between friends so you can see who has the best score and time and see if you can beat each other. In game as well you have random boxes that drop from the sky that grant you special abilities in game but to collect them you have to send one of you units to obtain it…  good luck Grill your going to need it. A problem with the game I notice was if you bought a unit say like Grill and he died because there was a hoard of enemies coming at him, you cannot do anything but watch you tower die because there is no way for you to get blocks to buy more units. Blocks also seemed very hard to obtain on some levels and felt like it took forever when it came to buying new units. Your tower has 10 lives and you can protect it in anyway possible. On the main screen you can see and scroll through each unit before playing the game which I thought was cool because you had a heads up for what each unit does before going in game. The graphics for the game are simple and go very well with it and the animation is the same but this isn’t a problem at all, I found it quite entertaining to watch while playing this fun packed game. The last thing I have to say is that the units can only be upgraded twice before they are at max level. I would have thought that each unit could have been upgraded differently depending on which one it was but oh well its not a big deal at the end of the day.

The Positives and Negatives

+ Hours of fun and plenty of re-play value
+ Keep you engrossed in the game and very tensed
+ For the price of the game its well worth every penny

– Takes ages to find online games (my internet might be to blame)
– Seems to take ages to get the currency in game
– The units can only be upgraded twice
– The camera and movement of the units can be very annoying

The Score

This kick-ass game is fricken awesome and I would recommend it to any of my friends and people who read this review for £4.99 that is no complaint because you get your monies worth and more. The game keeps you tense and engaged at all times and the music is just sick.  There were some minor problems along the way but oh well. For these reasons and more I’m going to have to give Cubemen 2 a whooping and well deserved 5/5.
