Deus Ex: Human Revolution has been developed by Eidos Montreal and produced by Sqaure Enix. The new instalment of Deus Ex is a prequel to the genre defining game originally released back in June 2000, with the sequel Deus Ex: Invisible war released December 2003. Deus ex has received near universal critical and industrial acclaim including “Best PC game of all time” in PC Gamer’s Top 100 PC Games. Deus Ex has been praised for its pioneering designs in players choice and multiple narrative paths.
The new instalment does not do much to innovate the genre in anyway; it does however excel at just about everything else. The best thing about Deus Ex is that you are never forced to play a set style, you can complete the entire game without killing a single enemy besides the main story bosses or you can slay them all in various ways with many amazing weapons and augmentations; “Augmentations being mechanical enhancements to the human body and the main driving plot of the game”.
Story
You get to play Adam Jensen, a security chief who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, when a group of what seems to be terrorists smash up a laboratory working on the latest cutting edge human upgrade tech. During the battle Adam is hurt really bad and goes under the knife and is implanted with the latest augmentations.
ugmentation is dividing the world around you, those who can afford it and those who can’t, if you do take the upgrade you are constantly on medication, unable to afford it? Your new body will start to regect the upgrades and cause great pain and suffering.
Adam’s friends and co-workers are all killed during the attack on the company and Adam sets out to find out who and why this attack happened and bring justice to those that are guilty. The ride is gritty, bumpy and full of twists and turns which are sure to keep you interested throughout the games 30+ hour of gameplay, if you decide to do all the side quests you could easily hit the 40 to 45hr of gameplay.
Gameplay
If you are not familiar to Deus Ex you will find this game similar to the likes of Fallout 3 or Mass Effect 2. You are able to sneak (Stealth), shoot and hack even upgrade your characters various skills in whatever way you wish. The story revolves around your moral choices similar to how the Mass Effect series works and it works really well. Overall gameplay is quite fast paced but incredibly challenging and you will always find something new around the corner to mess around with.
Graphics
Graphics are not up to standard to what you would expect in the next generation game, however saying that the game still looks amazing. The motion capture used for the facial expressions are nowhere near as good as they could have been and let the game down in that area, but since the game is so good in every other aspect it did not spoil it in the slightest. The art work and environment detail is simply astonishing, from the smallest thing to the largest building everything has been polished and detailed in every possible way. The game does use DirectX 11 however the developers have not used the raw power of DirectX 11 to its full potential as you might have seen in such games like Crisis 2 and the rather outdated Metro 2033 which is a let-down in some ways for PC gamers.
User Interface & Options
This game is not a console clone like we have seen recently with a lot of big release , so PC Gamers should be very happy. Eidos have put a lot of work into this title to make everything feel and work perfect for the PC/Console game platforms, with the implementation of the quick action bar to the way they have mapped the keys to the keyboard/mouse and giving us the option to map all keys ourselves, something we expect now from any pc title. The PC version contain the basic graphic and sound options that you would expect to see and if you like to control everything, then there is a .cfg file within the game directory where you are able to control all graphical options.
Final comments
Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a jaw dropping prequel with its outstanding multi choice story plot, multiple ways to take down and complete objectives, from the standard gun toting kill everything attitude, to the stealth, stun, knockout type of gameplay, the choice is yours. This type of game only comes out around every 5 years or so and blow all other games out of the water, this game does just that.
