Foreign Legion has been brought to us by publishers and developers Sakari Games, who originally created the game Buckets of Blood.
Foreign Legion is a multiplayer third person shooter designed to be enjoyed in large groups. You can play the small selection of well-designed maps and game types with two players, but it’s one of those games that are best with a lot of friends or random strangers.
You play a faceless soldier of the Foreign Legion tasked with destroying waves upon waves of equally identikit rebels. You level up with every generous splashing of cartoon gore and can use the buckets of cash you gain from every map to customise your character. Most of the accessories are silly and it’s pointless to buy anything apart from weapons and ammo, but it’s good to have the added customisation to set you aside from other, less fashionable soldiers of fortune.
It’s simply cheap, mindless fun, and it never makes any pretence at being anything else. There’s no semblance of a storyline, no dialogue, no cinematics, but it doesn’t end up harming the experience in any way. There isn’t really anything that can be subtracted from a game that aims to keep you entertained with tons of cartoon blood, after all.
The animation is oddly stilted and firing any of the vast array of weaponry never feels responsive, instead slightly delayed. Nothing in the environment seems to react to you or your guns, and shooting individual soldiers is bland and unsatisfying. They simply soak up bullets until they fall over, and while top notch graphics and reactions can hardly be expected from indie titles, the current high quality of similar indie releases leaves this one in the dust somewhat. This isn’t the game’s worst crime by far, though. The game is plagued by a multitude of glitches, from enemies getting stuck in mid-air, or in walls or halfway through the floor, ad nauseum. There were even a few cases of enemies becoming totally invincible regardless of cover, turning them into annoyances. After wiping out a wave of cannon fodder, one persistent commando will sometimes end up hanging around like the last fly at the picnic, cracking off pot-shots and blundering in front of enemies that can actually be killed. If it’s intentional for certain enemies to become arbitrarily indestructible, then it’s an extremely bad choice, but as an accidental occurrence, it can be game breaking, especially if you’re defending an objective and the invincible mob has a missile launcher.
So when the gameplay breaks, it has a tendency to break pretty badly. But 90% of the time the game is a good quick-fire multiplayer exercise that doesn’t require strategy and rewards working as a team. The ranking system works well enough to encourage competition without making it profitable to kill your teammates, and the copious amounts of cash you reap each game allow you to progress very quickly, for those gamers with instant gratification on the brain. It’s nothing special, but if you want some cheap multiplayer fun to pass half an hour here and there, it’ll do the job well.
