Over the past few years, indie games have typically fallen into the same trap as they try to stay afloat with a smaller audience, the introduction of microtransactions and gambling styled mechanics to recoup the cost of the development have become a common practice leading many to be less interested in trying newer titles. At the same time, there has been another surge in mobile gaming as a whole, as the quick in and out style of play is better suited to many as the mechanics present in other games become a popular play style for others with the growth of mobile gambling and casinos in particular. The success comes from the studio Mediatonic and the recent release of their game Fall Guys – a fun party styled obstacle course game which takes inspiration from the likes of Takeshi Castle and Total Wipeout has managed to find a huge amount of success without compromising in areas that many other games do – players queue to join a 60-man lobby which goes through a number of rounds, the first eliminates 15 players with a mad dash to the end of the course, the second very similar aiming to eliminate another 15 or so players. From here the game often splits remaining players into teams with a little teamwork required to win – a football mini-game sees players trying to score on each other, a hungry hippos egg collecting game to get the most points, once enough players have been eliminated it goes to final elimination, where the first to reach the end of a course and grab the crown or be the last to fall wins the game.
A game takes around ten minutes or so to complete if you’re able to get right through to the last round, taking part will give players a reward which can eventually be spent on cosmetic outfits and winning games rewards players with crowns to buy some more exclusive items only available from racking up some wins. The first day saw over 500,000 consecutive viewers on popular streaming platform Twitch with the game reaching over 200,000 daily since Steam is also reporting over 150,000 concurrent players daily too but it is expected that number may be much higher with PlayStation players too.
It is being touted as the feel-good game of the summer and for good reason, the game is extremely fun to play and if you have a few friends to go along on the ride with you, it’s certainly worth a go – the cost of the game is £15.99 or free on PlayStation Plus, players can opt in to pay for kudos, the in-game currency if they want to get costumes early but it is completely optional and not required at all, a fun summer game to make the current events feel a little less serious and a little light-hearted game to spend some time on.
