Get your nostalgia boots out as your about to be walking down 8bit memory lane with this one! Knights of Pen and Paper developed by ‘Behold Studios’ and published by ‘Paradox Interactive’ promises a new direction in the card game/RPG genre! After the speedy download (only 100mb or so which is a fantastic use of storage for such an expansive game) the retro music slowly crept out of the darkness and out of my PC Speakers and subwoofer! Instantly I was reminded of the Pokémon and Zelda days on the old Gameboy Advance and I instantly felt at home. After being released on mobile platforms on October last year, the current players will feel directly at home when they try the PC edition for the first time!
Knights of Pen and Paper is a turn-based RPG with the player being the key manager and operator of a pen and paper RPG table! This indie turn-based retro style pixel-art RPG which is closely inspired by the great titles of the 90’s is overwhelming with retro nostalgia and definitely plays like you are playing a traditional pen and paper RPG. The aim of the game is that the player gets to control the playing characters as-well as the dungeon master which gives the user the privilege to choose what battles you want to fight. This allows the player to craft their own unique battles and by putting together a bunch of fierce monsters the fight becomes more challenging and your rewards will be equally great! From the bat the player is greeted with 12 different classes and 17 characters to choose from and with more than 100 quests, 50 monsters, 100 items and equipment, blacksmithing, enchanting, mining, gathering, hidden treasures and a lot more, without a shadow of a doubt you can say this game gives fantastic value for money.
However is this game for you? That’s the key question for you to answer, after a long time playing both the PC edition and mobile edition I still feel like it isn’t my sort of game. As superbly polished as the game is I still feel that this type of card-esque genre isn’t in my ball park whatsoever and has no appeal to me which is slightly disappointing. Although, for lovers of card and turn based RPG’s this will definitely be a breath of fresh air and I would urge you to go out and pick this game up and support the developers who have worked endlessly to give the player the best card based experience possible and the amount of content you get for such a meagre price is very high value for money!
Overall, my opinion on the gameplay of the game is that it is very pernickety. I feel that the game isn’t generally for the PC platform; I feel that it would fit much more into a Nintendo DS or PS Vita title and that its control system would be much better optimised for mobile gaming. Nonetheless, Behold Studios have done a fine job of creating a suitable control scheme for the PC platform and it does indeed work a treat. The game was fluent, perfectly optimised (what can you say, its retro graphics!) and runs perfectly when recording with Bandicam and Fraps! So all you youtuber’s like me can let your audiences enjoy and witness your story! As this game isn’t on my genre hotlist I feel that my review might not be as in-depth as it could be, however before I attempted to play the game I did do some background knowledge to be able to provide a more balanced argument into the equation and I must say that the game is an excellent title in its genre!
With exciting combat, interestingly but awesome graphics and an addictive plot it is definitely a game I would recommend to check-out this year! Lovers of the card based games will thoroughly enjoy this and will definitely get their money’s worth out of the title! I love the game and I will definitely be continuing my adventures on the game! With a lack of high end gaming titles being released in the next month or two I would definitely recommend this to tide you over until you next blockbuster gaming purchase! The game oozes fun and the retro music is a joy to listen to and I have since purchased the soundtrack on the internet to hum away to the retro perfection! I would however urge people to try the mobile edition before moving to the PC edition as I feel that the mobile version is much easier to manoeuvre and control in comparison but that is completely down to preference.
Overall Opinion!
My honest opinion on Knights of Pen and Paper is that it is a fantastic title! I would urge all the lovers of this genre to definitely get this game and I would even urge all people who usually don’t go for this type of game to go out there and give it a try as your opinion might be drastically altered! With a fantastic story, retro graphics and a perfect soundtrack this is by far great value for money!
