About the game:
Legends Unite! The Dynamic Duo of Batman and Robin join other famous super heroes from the DC Universe including Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern to save Gotham City from destruction at the hands of the notorious villains Lex Luthor and the Joker.
Let’s start by saying that I am a big fan of the Lego games series. They have always been entertaining, fun to play, easy to pick up and have a decent amount of playing hours involved with them, and all this usually at a good price.
So having played many of the previous titles I was looking forward to this as for the first time Traveller’s Tales are introducing Voices and Open World play. The expectation then was that this, along with the opportunity to play as Superman (my favourite superhero), should be great fun.
In to the game then and the voice acting didn’t let me down. Voices are suitably applied to each of the characters and you don’t even miss Mark Hammill as the Joker as the voice used is pretty good. In to the story then and whilst chapters are reasonably long you do feel as though you are getting through it quite quickly. Between chapters you have the chance to venture round Gotham City and can do many of the side missions here. Instead of buying characters or the Red Brick unlocks you now have to find them and they are all over the city. Many elements are unaccessable early on until you gain access to Superman. With the ability to fly, his heat vision and freeze breath and his super strength you can access many of the villains’, gold bricks and roof top secrets.
The traditional game play elements are still all here and you can’t find everything in each of the chapters without first unlocking extra characters. To do this you have to find the villains’ around the map and complete the story to access the heroes. On each level you have to collect a number of Lego studs (in most cases this can be achieved on the first story play through), you have a civilian to rescue and you have the mini kit parts to find. These are the parts that you need the other characters for. In most cases I only got 2 or 3 kit parts during the story and didn’t notice any others so there is a challenge there when I go back.
I like this game, it has a lot going for it. It’s easy to play, its reasonably challenging, you actually have a chance at achieving the platinum trophy, and you get to play as lots of different super heroes and villains. There are a couple of minor things that have bugged me. These being: The whole city is quite dark – it is Gotham after all, but at the start of 1 level I couldn’t even see Batman in the front of the screen, I sat waiting thinking it was still loading and would get brighter when it was ready for play. The other bugbear is how Superman flies. During the story levels you use the ‘X’ button to determine his height and this works ok, but in the open world ‘X’ accelerates him and you have to move a cursor round with the left stick and this can be awkward and a pain. There is also no notification that the system has changed, you just have to try and work it out.
I recommend Lego Batman 2 if you like pick up and play fun games, super heroes or any of the Lego series. This is definitely one of the best so far. If you haven’t played a Lego game before this would be a great place to start but I would wait a few months as these have a habit of dropping quite quickly in price and your likely to find it for about £18 fairly soon.
