London 2012 The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games Review

With the London 2012 Olympics fast approaching it is time for us to get in to the spirits of the games, and what better way than with London 2012. This exciting and fun filled game, published by Sega, draws you into the Olympics and lets you participate in over 45 different events. London 2012 The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games  is available in Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Upon starting the game there are a few different game modes to choose from;

• Olympic games

This mode allows you to compete in the Olympic Games themselves. Events are randomly chosen for you at the start of each day where you are to choose two you would like to compete in. You then go through a set of qualifying rounds where if you are successful you get to compete in the finals and hopefully earn some medals. You are able to customise the national team as well as see what you have achieved so far throughout the tournament.

• Challenges

This mode is great for groups of players as it requires two or more people to actually play.  There are different challenges to complete, but to begin with it is necessary to complete the first set of challenges before you are able to move onto the second, etc. Each one includes three events in which you are to take part in, trying to build up as high or best a score as possible. At the end of each challenge the scores of you and your fellow players are combined and given a star rating (between 1 and 3). Tutorials are available to work through before each event; they do not take up much time but are optional.

• Events play

Here is where you can pick and choose which events you wish to play, either by choosing a custom playlist, creating a new playlist or just choosing an individual event. This allows you to play a few quick events if you are not up for spending a longer time playing. All events from the game are available in this mode, with the option to choose the difficulty of the event you want to play as well as whether or not you play against CPU’s.

• Party play events

Party play events are great for playing with friends or if you want something a bit more challenging. The difference with this mode is that you play the same events but you have targets to aim for, such as; in javelin you are to get the javelin in the targeted area.

If you are an Xbox Live member then you also have the option to compete online against other players to represent your national team. There are three options to choose from in this section which are as follows;

• Quick play – this is where you compete in random events
• Custom play – here you compete in specific events chosen by yourself
• Online tournament – gets you to compete in 5 different events

Gameplay

The game is fun, exciting and enables you to help time pass by very quickly without even noticing it. There are so many different modes to play and events to choose from that is very unlikely that you will end up becoming bored of playing, it will keep you amused for hours on end.

Graphics

The graphics are very pleasing to the eye and extremely colourful, they been done very well for a game involving people. I find sometimes that it is hard to get people correct and I feel they have hit the nail on the head with this game.

Music

Although the music can become repetitive and annoying, it is also at the same time not a bad thing to be hearing. Once you get into the game you lose track of how often you hear the music and it becomes part of the game.

Closing comments

There was only one thing that annoyed me throughout this game which was the commentary, it was very repetitive and even when you were doing well it would tell you the opposite. Other than this, I thoroughly enjoyed the game, and look forward to continuing to play it in the future. I am hoping to play more of the online game against other people and maybe soon get some high scores. Two of my favourite events throughout this game were Archery and Trampolining.
