I recently went out of my way and purchased a set of custom controllers, for my Playstation 4 and Xbox One/PC from a company called Mega Modz. They are an American based company so any UK gamers that love these controllers, be aware that the HMRC will be taking Duties and Taxes from you as well.
Now we have that out of the way, let us check out how easy it was to create and order your custom controller from the site. Now you can easily choose one of the pre-created modded controllers or you can choose to create your own, we decided to make our own from the collection of custom skins and configurations already available.
So my Playstation 4 Modded controller has the Titanfall Skin, Orange D-Pad, Mod Paddles in Orange, the Thumbsticks Orange and black. For my Xbox One Controller, I went for a Monster Hunter skin and Aluminum Gunmetal Thumbsticks.
Now creating your designs is super easy, you choose the skin you fancy, then choose each other added addition, for example, let us take the design of the Xbox One/PC Wireless Controller. You can choose the Back colour, Black or white, D-Pad colour or change it up to the Elite Magnetic pad, change the colour of the ABXY Buttons, to static colour, which I personally feel is stupid as they no longer show the ABXY. You can change the view and menu buttons to static colours, which again removes the icons from the pad. Thumbsticks can be changed, grip sides and battery cover.
The PlayStation 4 Controller design options are almost the same with some new features, mods, and paddles
Mods
Enhance your gaming experience and choose from the options that meet your combat needs. Select from pre-configured multi-mod packages or add desired mods one by one.
Paddles
Remap your stock buttons functionality with reprogrammable paddles and increase your controller usability. Choose from available design options and add LED running light for a more stylish look.
Each controller has the option to purchase added accessories and Selecting Build Time And Warranty Plan – SERVICES at a cost.
Delivery was not bad, within 5 days from the day I ordered to the day the item arrived the first time, as I turned it away the first time due to HMRC Tax Payments being delayed on DHL end.
So we have come to the final results, how did they do for the prices they charge, first we have to get the original prices, Xbox One Wireless is £44.99, and the PlayStation 4 controller is £49.99. Now the prices I paid for the modded version where £61.74 for the Xbox One Controller and £106.16.
I only added the skin and the Aluminum Gunmetal thumbsticks which cost £16.75, which is a bargain. The quality of the skin is amazing, well placed, no errors, no rips, the original skin is nowhere to be seen on top of the controller, I really do like the finished quality. The new thumbsticks feel great under the thumb, and just as good as the original version. When in use, there was no difference when using the modded version compared to the original version, and it does not suffer from fingerprint marks, so I am a very happy gamer and I love this skin.
Now let us look at the PlayStation 4 version, with this one I added a new skin, mods and paddles, custom thumbsticks and a custom D-Pad colour, which cost an extra £56.17, so just over double the price of purchasing an original controller.
The skin is attached to the controller perfectly, with no issues anywhere, the new thumbsticks, and the D-Pad feels just as good as the original. The biggest added edition is the mods and paddles, which from what I have seen from the videos require a lot of work to add to the controller.
I went for the Rapid Fire Mod ‘Rapid Fire is the main function of our modchip that turns all semi-automatic and single shot weapons into fully automatic ones, thus giving players an unbeatable advantage of more shots per second compared to the opponents. In simple terms, Rapid Fire pulls the Fire Trigger on your behalf. When you pull and hold the trigger, the mod keeps pressing the trigger over and over again until you release the trigger.’
You can find out more about this more here, and all other mods from here. Information about the paddles themselves can be found here.
The only issue I have with the skin is its fingerprint heavy, thanks to its glossy finish, which was my fault as I ordered it, what they could do, is offer a mat finish version for every skin, like the Xbox skin. The Mod paddles where easy to use and where already set up for the games I needed them for, like Battlefield, Call of Duty, Fortnite, and many others.
So do I think the extra costs added to the controllers along with the modded features are worth it? on one hand, I would say Yes, in another hand I would say No. I think the cost of the Skin, D-Pad, and Thumbsticks are at a great price, but the mods, I feel are a little overpriced, with some mods costing as much as $69.99/£52.71. The final finish though is fantastic, just as good as the Xbox One Controller.
So we have come to my final thoughts, would I spend my money again, on another set of controllers from Mega Modz, I would for sure on an Xbox One, but I am little unsure if I would add the mods and paddles to my next PS4 control pad, and I would look for a Mat finish skin instead of a gloss finish. Overall though, they are perfectly designed, perfectly skinned and well thought out, the site offers plenty of options for any gamer looking for a custom controller to add to there gaming artillery.
