Path of Titans has stomped its way to console and being a huge fan of everything dinosaur related I wanted to get my hands on this game and give it ago. I know the game has been around for a while as it was first announced in January 2019 so over the years, I have been keeping an eye on the development and updates and finally jumped on the chance to play it. I got my hands on an early access copy for PlayStation 5 so this preview will be covering that.
Let’s play as a Dinosaur
It’s an MMO survival game with a twist and the twist is? your character is a dinosaur. There is a wide variety of dinosaurs to choose from and each has its own personality and play style. It’s set in the Prehistoric era (obviously) and basically allows the player to start off as a baby dinosaur and work their way up to become an adult. It’s very similar to The isle that I played on PC but has more customisation and dinosaurs to choose from. You control your dinosaur and get given a certain objective/task to complete to get points and level up. It is very funny to think that dinosaurs get given quests but in Path of Titans the game tries to give you a purpose and a means by offering you things to do, it’s just sad that they are very generic tasks. Collect this, eat that it’s very mundane and repetitive. Story-wise there isn’t one other than try not to die.
As far as the MMO elements go this game is fairly simple. Watch your dinosaur grow, get the odd skill to allow your dinosaur to bite, tail whip, etc and while you’re at it eat some food, stay hydrated and pick some flowers…. On paper, a dinosaur MMO sounds fantastic and I was really looking forward to playing it, but after sinking some hours into Path of Titans I’m feeling a bit let down. The dinosaurs themselves are amazing and the fact that there are many to pick from herbivores to Carnivores does offer a really good selection to delve into, but when you get to the core of the game it feels slow, boring and very repetitive.
An MMO With Dinosaur
You start out as a young dinosaur, where you have to complete a quick tutorial which is very useful but once this is done you are free to explore the map and begin your life. My first thought with it being an MMO is that you will see other dinosaurs doing their own things and maybe party up with them and do things together like a herd if you are playing as herbivores or group hunting when playing as a carnivore but sadly the game and servers that I played just felt empty. There was little to no AI or real players and when I eventually did come across players there were only two of them. We partied up and I was like cool what do we do now and they were like we can do some quests. By quests, they meant to pick some mushrooms, pick flowers and this was pretty much it. I didn’t know what I was expecting but I wasn’t thinking that it would just be these silly quests with the odd visit to this location which would take ages to get to as the map is quite big. After about three hours of doing this, I got really bored and decided to change over to being a carnivore in the hopes that hunting prey would add more enjoyment and a challenge to the game.
Play as a Carnivore or as a Herbivore
This wasn’t the case, playing as a carnivore is more challenging yes but that is mainly because finding food is hard and normally if you come across other carnivores or herbivores they will gang up and attack you. I suppose that would have been like that in the wild but living a life of solitude isn’t really enjoyable for me. MMOs are normally busy with other players and things going on, Path of Titans misses this mark quite a bit and I was really sad about it. Maybe it’s because the game has only just come to the console or maybe it’s because players are just playing Community Servers where they can mod things and do their own thing but either way it was an experience that I will remember for the wrong reason.
One of the decent factors with this game is the graphics of the environment and the animations and behaviours of the dinosaurs. It really sells the prehistoric era and I love the different customisation choices you can select for the dinosaurs. When you do play with others it’s nice to stand out and not look completely like every other dinosaur on the map. The roars and atmospheric sounds are so cool and I like that you have different speaking options for dinosaurs. So, you can do a friendly call, threatening call and a few others to truly roleplay your inner dinosaur.
Single Player, Multiplayer & Community Servers
Path of Titans has a lot of replay value, this is due to it being an online game as well as having a big array of dinosaurs to play as. You can have multiple dinosaurs created and can drop in and out if you fancied a change. The game comes with Single Player, Multiplayer & Community Servers, all these modes give you plenty of player time and I found that playing Community Servers was where you could come across a wide number of players. The community is really friendly and I got on with a lot of the players, even had a player show me the ropes and teach me how to play after I left the tutorial cave but there was something off with the game and I just struggled to stay engaged for long periods of time.
Conclusion
Path of Titans was something that I was truly looking forward to playing. Dinosaur MMO survival game what more could you want? There are 18 core dinosaurs currently that you can play as and the map has a rich ecosystem that was beautiful to look at and explore but didn’t land the finishing blow. It was good to customise my dinosaurs and it was enjoyable when I eventually managed to find players to party and explore the game with but the majority of my game time was spent alone, completing boring tasks and trying to find things to actually do that would grant me some sort of satisfaction. Single-player was okay, Multiplayer felt baron as if no one was even on the server and the Community Servers were present but either password locked, full or when you did join just didn’t really enjoy playing. I’m not sure why I didn’t like Path of Titans as I love dinosaurs and when playing The isle on PC, I really got into the whole living life cycle of the dinosaur.
Though I feel that Path of Titans is an unfinished idea where you have base mechanics just no real end game or real object other than eating, sleeping, growing and repeating. If you want a game to play where you can just switch off from the world and run around as a dinosaur then this would tick the box but compare to other games on the market, I wouldn’t say that Path of Titans isn’t doing anything above and beyond that really gives it a wow factor. Seeing as the game is early access there might be some changes coming out that could shake up the current gameplay but as it stands Path of Titans just feels like an average gaming experience.
