In this review I shall be looking at Peppa Pig: World Adventures on the Xbox platform, a game developed by Petoons Studio and published by Outright Games, played on the Xbox Series X. Now this review will feel odd, as I am typing it up, but the whole experience is based on my son’s playtime. My son is only 4 years old and tries his best to play games, by watching me and other players, playing the same games he enjoys like Mario 3D World. This will be his first time, jumping into a game, with no prior experience, from youtube or me playing the game.
So first off this game is purely for fans of Peppa Pig and should be suitable for young children. For me as an adult, Peppa Pig can be annoying and pushes jumping in muddy puddles too much as a good thing. Then again Peppa Pig is also lovable, and enjoyable while drawing kids’ attention away from everything else going on around them and into their little big hearts. As an adult, did I want to install Peppa Pig on my system, hell no, but my son was bouncing around the room when he found out I had a copy and then waited patiently for the game to download and install.
As a reviewer, I need to respect the key audience, young children, not me an adult, so on the keynote, you should be made aware that everything here is based on how my son played the game, as getting him to provide an in-depth analysis would be impossible.
Welcome to the world of Peppa Pig
So the first thing you get to do is create your character, my son is a fan of Peppa Pig, and he had to create a character that he remembered, this happened to be Rebecca Rabbit. Now the design was not exactly up to his high standard, but she did have rabbit ears and the same colour fur. Once completed you get to jump into the game and learn the basic controllers.
Everything is narrated, and narration is fantastic and extremely detailed, yet my son still struggled a little, until I jumped in and said to him, listen and follow the on-screen prompts (yes he knows those terms). Jumping in muddle puddles is the first thing you do in this game, and my son spent a good amount of time in that one muddy puddle. I managed to make a coffee.
Muddy Puddles are Fun
After jumping in a muddy puddle for some time, you get a chance to create your mum and dad. For my boy this seemed a hard task, passing the task to me to do. Like I know what Rebecca Rabbit’s mum and dad looked like? So I googled it and created them as close as possible, even though I got shouted at, as my son wanted to add things to them. In the end, they did look like them to a degree but had some Qwerks from my boy’s choices, it seems he was willing to move past having them look the same this time.
After creating your family, it’s time to play some football, something my son was not best pleased in doing, felt it was a little slow and wanted to boot it like super Sonic. Though I did feel there was plenty of praise when you did score a goal.
No more fun, time to build
Now its time to build your home, and you can guess how this went, well you will in a moment…
If you have watched Peppa Pig, you know that Rebecca Rabbit’s family live in a hill, not a house. My son was not pleased with the options available to him to create a home for his character and family. To the point where he put the game down and wanted to play something else. He wanted to create a home based on Rebecca Rabbit’s home. You know a hill with a holes, or holes, some windows and maybe some nice juicy carrots. Something like the picture below.
But this is impossible as you can only create houses, now this is not a good idea for young ones that watch Peppa Pig, you need to cover everything. It took me a little time to get my son back into the game and create what I called a new home for Rebecca Rabbit.
You get to choose the walls, roof, windows, door and what is in the garden, (swing, slide, bush, tree, chicken or a tent).
After creation, you get to move in and the first people you get to meet after moving in are Peppa Pig, George, Daddy Pig and Mommy Pig, which made my son jump for joy. “Daddy, Daddy, Look, Peppa Pig has come to visit me, Daddy, look”.
The game is full of fun tasks for your little ones to enjoy, from going to playgroup, playing in the park, and even going to New York. You can play in your room but are unable to decorate it. You can even go to Peepa House and have a play date.
World Adventures means exactly that, you not only get to visit New York, but there also is a host of other places you get to visit, interact with, and meet new characters. London, Germany, Italy, Holly Wood, Paris etc. There is so much to see and do, it might be a little too much for some children of a much younger age, that just want to jump in muddy puddles. I found this to be right for my son, he loved the story, but he did not know that it was also educational as well.
Even though I felt it was educational which is a good thing, it also offers up a great story, with plenty of interactive tasks to do, it is well worth your kid’s time in the game. They get to experience the world in a way that they understand, with their friends in the game that they know, trust and love to watch. Will this be fun for all ages, maybe not? My son did not enjoy it that much, did not understand it that well, and just wanted to bake cakes, play football, and go to playgroup. Yet, he played the full game with me by his side, and I asked in the end, did you like it, he replied ‘ Can I watch Sonic please’.
Given that as an answer he did come back to it, so I guess as he gets older and understands the world better, he will like it more. What the developers should consider is something kids like, like going to the Zoo, Park, indoor Play gyms etc. I recon the children that watch Peppa Pig will enjoy going to the zoo, seeing the animals, naming them, feeding them, running around a park, swinging, climbing frames, sliding, playing football, skipping, and jumping in muddy puddles. I know my son would love it.
Based on the experience my son had in this educational, interactive, fun game, I would score it around 8/10, for an adult, it’s…
