Pepper Grinder is an Action, Adventure 2D Platformer that was developed by Ahr Ech. Thanks to the publisher Devolver Digital, we were introduced to another amazing game that was able to reach the public eye. I’ve been waiting for Pepper Grinder since it was announced during Devolver’s yearly showcase, which is always outdoing the last one each year. Now, let’s grind our way into the review and season it with my experience.
When Making A Screwdriver, You Need a Driver
During your adventure, you play as Pepper. The girl was shipwrecked and had her treasure stolen while she was knocked out on the beach. You’re tasked with getting it back and defeating the jerks who stole your treasure and crossed you. Traversing the landscape using this giant drill that is about the size of her whole body and learning how to use the drill to its fullest power. And collect stickers along the way at the local vendors.
A Tale That’ll Pierce The Heart
The story is pretty straight-lined and hole-ly heck is the road to get to the end of a twisty and crazy rollercoaster. As Pepper, you work your way to kill anything crossing your path, collecting Skull Coins, and pulling some sick or crazy manoeuvres to find your One Piece. Pepper Grinder would appeal to people who are into speed running, with the Trial Runs for each location. There’s also the whole thing when fighting the bosses. Getting to learn the mechanics of the area I’m in and learning to fight the boss in it with only four health. (Or eight if you buy four armour gems at the Curiosity Shop)
The Looks and Sounds of the Drill
Now, each area I went through had some great soundtracks that both motivated me to get through it all and taunted me when I was searching for the Skull Coins. Yet, the gem when it comes to the soundtrack has to go to the boss fights. Each one feels like I’m putting any shaped block into the square hole and I’ve got no complaints.
With the amazing retro style graphics and the beautiful attention to detail on both the bosses and the way we can customize our character’s looks by buying different hair and cloak colours at the Curiosity Shop. I also really appreciated the amount of work done for not only the environment art, but if you pay attention to the map’s surroundings, you might catch something adorable as you move along the map.
Drilling 101
When it comes to the mechanics, it is as smooth as drilling a new hole into some fresh wooden plank and chaotic when you stripped the screw when trying to unscrew it. Getting to move through the dirt, water, snow and skulls feels both amazing and slippery.
If you’re not careful with the manoeuvring, you can rocket yourself into the abyss with zero control. There is quite a bit of replayability when it comes to beating the developer’s times when it comes to the Time Attacks. There’s also collecting treasure to buy as many stickers you can get your hands on and making unique sticker books with your own personal touch.
I’m Out of Drill Puns
Pepper Grinder was a fun game that you could finish up in one sitting, but would take hours if you ever attempted a flawless run. To all those who love to speedrun, crazy manoeuvring and some crazy boss fights, then please pick up Pepper Grinder. My only stripped screw when it came to my adventure was the ability to skip a cutscene when re-entering boss fights. Either way, this was one screwy time and I enjoyed every minute of it.
