The reason I purchase the Nintendo Switch, other than being a massive fan of Nintendo and their first party games, was the idea of having console power on the go. Then I saw Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and that was it, I had to buy one. The option to play anywhere, at any time, with anyone, was just too much. The idea of taking my system from the big screen to a little screen, and hiding in the toilet while the other half is having a BF was just too tempting.
So I got the console on launch day, well just after and the obvious decision was to purchase a Nintendo Switch Case, and Nintendo had me covered as they released their branded case for £16.99 RRP, they call it the ‘Nintendo Switch Accessory Set’. The set offers a screen protector, which is very handy when it comes to preventing scratches, wrist strap so you are able to carry your case more securely. The ability to carry around earphones, 2 two Joy-Con straps, 5 games and MicroSD cards with MicroSD Card Adaptors, if required. The organising pad which holds the games can also be angled to become a stand for the console, so you can game with your friends, you know the term, ‘play with anyone, at any time, with anyone’. The case was great, but does lack some safety features, and does not hold the charger, which is a shame.
This is it below if you have no idea what I am on about or never heard of one.
So over a year later I have many more games and 5 Slots is just not enough, plus I would like to carry around the charger plug as well. So after looking around, I found a rather interesting looking case, that holds 10 Games, a bunch of accessories and can be used as a stand for my Switch if required. The best thing about the case, it reminds me of Super Mario himself, thanks to its design, a blue jumpsuit that wraps around the case with yellow magnetic buttons, then you have a red accent that covers the rest of the case, which resembles Mario’s top, a well thought out design I must say, and fans should love it.
So I ordered one off Amazon, here it is, and thanks to Amazon Prime I got next delivery.
So what do I think of it, does it do more than the official case?
The first thing I noticed was the smell, something the official case did not suffer from, when asked why, I was told it is because the case was made using PU Leather and PVC, and the smell will dissipate over time. So I chucked it outside in the glorious summer UK sunshine and around 48hrs later the smell disappeared. The next thing I noticed, is nothing major, just some attention to detail;
First off is the jumpsuit design is not aligned up, which is a shame as the idea is great. When I opened up the case, I found that the blue stitching used to stitch down the jumpsuit made itself known inside, the designer should have attached the inside material over the blue stitching. Then finally where the stand folds, maybe put a line of stitching, just so the material does not feel to lose. Other than those minor issues, or as I call attention to detail the case is durable and the rest of the stitching is great.
So since we are inside the case, let have a look at what the case offers, on the front face you have a mesh compartment which allows you to store the charger, headphones and I would say the 2x Joy-Con Straps. Then we have a flap that holds 10 game cartridges and can be used as a stand for the Switch, for safety/security that stand also has two elastic bands, to hold the switch in place, they have been placed perfect, as you can see from the picture below.
The bottom of the case holds the Switch, with Joy-Cons attached with two elastic bands, which holds the switch down, a great idea for safety. The official case does not offer this, and there have been some near accidents when I have opened the case and the Switch has almost fallen out.
So that is my new case, now I ask myself, how could they improve on an already good design? just two things, a wrist strap, and a screen protector. A wrist strap will allow gamers to hold their beloved Switch easier while it is in the case and a screen protector, is something I expect now when I purchase a case for any mobile device, I would say it is a must-have. If someone was to purchase a Switch along with this case, having the added additions would make it a complete bundle, for safety, security, and portability.
So how does the case perform?, well as case, it holds the game cartridges perfect, the size of the slots also allow you to carry your MicroSD cards with MicroSD Card Adaptor, something I found rather handy, as I do have a lot of downloaded games, and currently two 128GB MicroSD Cards in use. I also found that I could double up on the game cartridges if I needed to, making the total storage, 20 if you fancy doing that.
The case is lightweight and has an EVA Shell, which simply means shock absorbing, which you hope will protect your Nintendo Switch from any possible accident drops. The case is made of PU leather (artificial leather), and a heavy-duty zipper, there is also the Jumpsuits magnetic buttons, that also locks down the case.
The straps hold the Switch in place when packaged away, and when used as a stand. The cloth material inside the case keeps everything snug and safe, can 100% Guarantee that the screen will not get scratched, NO!, just to be more cautious. They have added a little feature to the stand, a small bit of velcro, can be attached to the back of the stand which helps hold it in place, it is not really needed, though, say someone bumped into the table hard enough, it would stop the stand from falling into itself.
So what are my final thoughts? Well rather simple for this one, it is a great case and offers more room than the official version, the Mario design is rather eye-catching and Nintendo Fans will love it. The security and safety features added to the case give you peace of mind, well to me it does. The durability and solid construction along with almost perfect stitching adds to the purchase value. There are only a couple of flaws like the smell, and attention to detail, then there is the opportunity to improve by adding a wrist strap and screen protector.
Other than that the case is well worth the purchase at only £12.99 (15.07.2018), if you are a Mario Fan, that its even more worth a purchase. If you have read this review and want to know where to purchase this case from, click Here, it is a direct link to Amazon.
