Sniper Elite V2 is, if you haven’t already guessed, a sniping game. It’s a remake of the WW2 shooter back in the days of the PS2/Xbox generation and it does feel a bit dated – in both a good and bad way. Luckily, the “bad” isn’t all that bad, the game simply doesn’t look as polished as other shooters like Battlefield or Call of Duty – but this is soon forgotten as unlike the other modern war shooters, this game is actually a lot of fun!
This game isn’t about blasting the face off of every goon that steps in your path; instead it’s relatively slow paced and expects you to use brain not broad to figure out how to complete the level. You have to think about the situation that you’re in and how the next move you make will affect you. You have to use stealth, grenades and an impressively powerful sniper rifle to complete objectives – which can be anything from assassinating high ranked Nazi officers, to blowing up and enemy’s vehicle by shooting the fuel cap off it from miles away.
Being that the game is based on sniping, the sniping aspect is, amazing! It tries to give you the most realistic experience possible, meaning you have to monitor your heart rate and breathing as you aim, as well as adjusting your shot for wind and distance. Arguably the best part of the game is the X-Ray kill cam! More often than not, when you make a fatal shot, a secondary camera activates the minute you pull the trigger – giving you a slow mo view of the bullet erupting from the end of your rifle, and then it pans around to your target treating you to an anatomical view of your enemy as the bullet passes through them. There are some fantastically detailed views – from a skull being shattered to pieces, to the bullet bursting through some poor man’s testicle. It is actually immensely satisfying to watch your target’s limbs and organs exploding because of your shot.
The campaign is pretty lengthy, giving you around 10+ hours of single player gameplay, although it can be played co-operatively online. Other game modes for two players include “Kill Tally”, where you and your friend take on waves of enemies, each increasing in difficulty, until you die, “Bombing Run”, in which you move out from a central point to find and retrieve airplane parts, as well as “Overwatch”, where one player is the sniper, confined to an elevated position, whilst player two is the foot soldier, attempting to complete objectives on the ground whilst spotting for the sniper.
There are 3 modes of sniping controls, Cadet being the simplest, this means straight up, bare to the bones, aim and shoot, no environmental or other factors to throw off your shot. Next is Marksman, which ups the ante a bit, and lastly there is Sniper Elite – challenging you in every way, from non-stop enemy attacks, to heart rate and breathing measures, with wind control and stance thrown in to help you miss your target.
As mentioned before, the environment could use some work. It doesn’t look bad, although a little more polish on the top wouldn’t do it any harm. It’s also worth mentioning that the locations are pretty limited in where you can explore. There are rooms full of doors that can’t be opened, lights that can’t be shot out and small chunks of rubble that cannot be navigated. This is a minor gripe, but if these issues were fixed, it would make the game feel so much smoother to operate in.
Sometimes your enemies can seem super-human, once they have noticed you, they close in on your position and spray you with bullets, their advance is usually pretty quick so it can make it much harder to kill them, although this just adds to the realistic style of gameplay that the game throws you in, and I actually found it quite fun. It makes you think on your toes, do a bit of improvising and plan an escape route as quickly and quietly as you can, whilst your enemies stand mere inches away from your last position.
Sniper Elite V2 is a thrilling, atmospheric experience that feels like a genuine shooter, rather than a staged brawl. It’s a refreshing break from the ‘normal’ style shooters that are usually churned out, and the Kill Cam really adds a gruesome but fun kick to the game. If only the levels could allow more exploration and look a little more polished, the game would be pretty much perfect. For now, it’s a great niche game that you should definitely give a go!
