Super Splatters is a physics based action puzzle game released recently for PC. This is the second game company Spiky Snail (this has to be my favourite company name so far) has created, with their first being The Splatters (following a similar concept) on Xbox Live Arcade.
So what is the aim of Super Splatters? Your task is to gain the most views possible. “How do you gain views?!” I hear you cry, well it’s pretty simple. All you have to do is perform stunts with your ‘Splatters’. As you perform different stunts and use areas of the environment to aid you, your view count will increase. It is incredibly fun to try and increase your view count and also try to compete against your friends!
Gameplay
As mentioned earlier the aim of Super Splatters is to get a high view count. When you start a level you will see the environment you are placed in, the amount of blobs and pods which you will have to explode. You have to fire your Splatters by pointing to which direction you wish your Splatter to go and then hitting the left mouse button. To gain views you will want to perform tricks/techniques while exploding the pods. One of the ways to perform a stunt is using the ‘flip’ feature, which reverses which direction you were travelling in, to help yourself cover more pods or to travel down a slide. As you progress through the game you will learn a variety of ways to perform more stunts to help your view count increase – one of these allows you to re-direct yourself mid-flight. This is extremely useful when a set of pods is out of reach from the angle you are positioned in at the start the level.
Super Splatters is truly an interesting twist to the physics based puzzle games on the market today, with some amazing gameplay features that will keep you hooked for a long period of time.
Replayability is also an important factor to bring up with this game. As the game is score based it essentially encourages you to keep trying to beat your high score. A brilliant feature was that the game allows you to watch how your friends completed a level, this way you are able to learn from their tactics and try to beat their high score. To me this was a great way to allow players to improve how they play the game, whilst at the same time proving that the player actually reached that score without cheating (oh the amount of leader boards that get hacked). This game will have you playing for a long period of time and if you can get your friends involved – an even longer period of time as you try to knock their high scores to the bottom!
Graphics
The graphical style of Super Splatters is really nice – with a mix between realism and cel-shading to create a great looking visual style. Putting the settings to the highest will let you experience Super Splatters in the most gorgeous way possible, letting you see every splat in glorious high definition.
Sound
Firstly I need to start by saying that the Splatters have cute little sound effects. Yes, I said cute… let’s move on from that. On top of the cute and hilarious noises the Splatters make, the game has a great upbeat soundtrack which is enjoyable to listen to as you are trying to work out puzzles… and hasn’t yet got tiring or repetitive to listen to. This is one puzzle game I would definitely recommend picking up the soundtrack for.
So Super Splatters is a truly enjoyable and fresh puzzle game which will have players hooked on beating their (and their mates) high scores for many days to come. It is also nice to come across a puzzle game with a well written soundtrack – especially one which I have then gone and purchased afterwards. When picking up Super Splatters I was honestly expecting a typical puzzle game which wouldn’t give much challenge or gameplay… but I got something much different. I got a game that I will be playing for a long time and have already convinced my mates to get into playing.
If you’re a fan of the physics based puzzle games you will want to check Super Splatters out for sure. It brings so much more to the physics based puzzle game genre than I have seen so far, along with brilliant little characters and a beautiful soundtrack. Now it should be noted I am usually quite harsh towards puzzle games, not really enjoying them or just passing them off as a brief experience… though Super Splatters has changed my mind on the genre completely – while getting me hooked into its brilliance.
