The bridge is a 2D indie puzzle game where you take the role of an old professor asleep under a tree. From what started out as a project for both Ty Taylor and Mario Castaneda; turned into a mind boggling and law
defining game published by The Quantum Astrophysicists Guild.
The puzzles begin as soon as you load up your game; there are no long winded cut scenes or speeches explaining who you are and what you seem to be doing there. If you are a big fan of these parts in games, don’t expect any here, but instead be ready to jump straight in. You start off with a few simple puzzles to allow you to familiarise yourself with the controls and the aim within the levels, but as you work through they quickly build upon their toughness with some really mind stumping ones towards the end.
The controls are very simple to master and that’s what lets you concentrate on the puzzles themselves and admire the graphics backing them up. Defying the laws of gravity; twisting and turning the surrounding world to reach the door to your next destination whilst avoiding those obstacles that are trying to get in your way. It may take you a few attempts to figure out the puzzle you are currently working on but an added bonus which I appreciated quite a lot in this game was the ability to turn back time instead of starting the level from scratch. It saved so much time in having to figure out how to get back to the same point that it went wrong previously; before having to work out where to go next.
The main thing to remember throughout is that if you can see a surface, whether it be the one you are standing on, above you, to the side of you or even a ledge it can be used to get to the door. But don’t forget to collect the key before you work your way there or you will need to rewind and start again. You will sometimes need to make a fair few mistakes or take a variety of paths before finding the correct one through, but that just adds to the fun of the game and adds to your experience playing it.
There has been a lot of detail put into the game and it is remarkably beautiful to look at. Even the obstacles have a great amount of detail added into them, there is nothing left to not admire, which some people may find distracting. But for me it was nice to find a game that is so visually appealing as well as having a good old challenge to it. The art is done in greyscale, which I always find to be a lovely thing; colour can sometimes take away the beauty they are trying to visualise.
Unfortunately there isn’t a hint system put in, so if you get stuck I am afraid you will have to figure this one out on your own. Unless, however you fancy cheating a little and finding a help video or write up, but that’s a little bit cheeky and takes then fun and satisfaction out of completing the puzzles. The fun is in the trying and success after all.
Upon the completion of the game you unlock an alternative version, which has a more challenging set of puzzles compared to your first run through along with an alternative ending for you to uncover. There is a lot of time that you can spend on playing through this game and if you are after a bit more of a challenge then this is great for you to sink your teeth into.
Another benefit I found with the bridge is that it is compatible with a game controller for the PC as well as a keyboard. Personally I much preferred to use my PC controller as it was a lot more reactive and fluent, where as with the keyboard for me didn’t seem to come as easy (even with the simple controls).
Closing comments:
I thoroughly enjoyed playing through the bridge; it took a different turn onto the puzzle games I normally play. With lovely graphics and setting music in the background it was hard not to be absorbed in, and no I am not talking about the wormholes. It is defiantly a game I would recommend playing if you are into these types of games and enjoy getting your brain going.
