In the July monthly update for Rust, the popular sandbox survival game for PC, comes the addition of modular vehicles and a range of bug fixes, improvements and items. Live Thursday July 2nd at 7pm BST, the update will let players build their own vehicles, and with them, source, craft and research a wide variety of cosmetic and performance-based upgrades, including engine parts and modular bodywork.
Modular vehicles have been in concept limbo for a long time, with the earliest concepts coming from exactly five years ago in DevBlog 67. Now, following the overhaul and modification of the map with roads that can accommodate them, modular vehicles are finally arriving in Rust. Adding to the wide range of transport options now available in Rust, including minicopters, horses and hot air balloons, players can transport their squad, haul resources, attack an enemy base or simply drive them into other players, the choice is theirs.
How it all works
Modular vehicles will spawn near roads, with a semi-random selection of modules attached. Spawning in three chassis varieties (short, medium, and long), they’ll have taken heavy damage upon players finding them, with no fuel and no engine parts.
To get them working players will need to source low-tier engine parts around the map, with higher-tier parts available for purchase at the Compound (Outpost), which can then also be researched and crafted to make the vehicle faster or more fuel efficient. Engine parts will need to have their respective component slots filled (and not broken) to get the vehicle up and running, in addition to some Low Grade Fuel being added to the tank in the back.
To customise them, players can now purchase a vehicle lift at the Compound, which is also researchable and craftable. This will let players edit vehicles, crafting, swapping or moving modules as they see fit. This includes additional seating, storage containers, flatbeds, water tanks and more. Modules can be repaired by a hammer or at a vehicle lift, but be careful, if every module on the vehicle reaches zero health, the vehicle becomes a wreck which can no longer be used, before eventually being destroyed and spawning elsewhere in the world.
New Additions
-
Helicopter Vendors and Conversations
-
Long gone are the days of finding helicopters at the roadside, you’ll now be able to buy helicopters by talking to Airwolf, a new NPC found at the Bandit Town. Upon talking to him you’ll have the option to either buy a Minicopter (750 Scrap) or Scrap Transport Helicopter (1250 Scrap). Expect RPG elements to be expanded going forward.

Improvements and Bug Fixes
-
Vehicle Input Lag
-
Vehicle input lag has been reduced by up to 100ms by forcing new positions to be sent out immediately after the physics system updated them on the server. This applies to the modular cars, but also all other vehicles.
-
-
Smoother Roads
-
Polished road intersection handling and road layout smoothing to make roads easier to travel along with cars. The width of the side roads has been increased as well as the world size: 4250 to 4500. Finally, roadside decor will no longer spawn on top of roads around intersections.

Optimization
-
World-space grids were taking up a lot of memory because they were always fully loaded for the entire map. They now only load the areas around the player. From testing, this change reduces memory usage by 800 MB.
-
Minor improvements have been made to tree rendering, LODs, and GC allocations.
-
Rust is currently 50% off (£15.49) along with all other Facepunch titles as part of the Steam Summer Sale, running June 25th – July 9th. Learn more about the update in the blog.
