Worms is the big daddy off co-op Deathmatch destruction and was probably responsible for many fights pre internet in university dorms and households as your friend Jack pulled off that incomprehensible shot through the level to blow up your last two damn works JACK HOW DID YOU EVEN MANAGE THAT.
Worms for those out of the loop is a 2D, multiplayer battle action game, where you take control of 2 to 4 worms, wiggle your way across the battle field and destroy your enemies with a ludicrous armoury of weapons at your disposal.
Worms WMD seems to be a back to glory kind of game, Team 17 have tried and experimented with other kind of styles in worms, and none have seemed to of captured the heart of players that the original 3, Worms, Armageddon and Worms World Party managed to achieve.
So it seems they just went simple and back the basics, to create a game that the lovers of worms have wanted and waited for over 16 years and damn it if this isn’t as near perfect as we could have hoped for.
Do we have 2D levels? Yes and they look gorgeous, if you get the chance, slap this game on a 4k display and you will understand true love, this game looks like a modern 2D title should look, and that is what you want out of destructible scenery, something beautiful to ruin!
Weapons have taken a massive boost, now featuring over 80 weapons, from old favourites to new insane weapons such as the dubstep gun from Saints row 3.
So yeah, this game has some DLC, and it is pre order bonus related, but it comes with a massive amount of content, but…I don’t like that and if you don’t either well I wouldn’t go for it. Pre ordering games is always hit and miss (Hi No man’s sky) and when trying to entice you with limited weapons, it never sits right with me.
The addition of new level based weapons also adds a new level of strategy, having the ability to use a mounted sniper riffle, machine gun or mortar which allows a faster rate of fire than other conventional weapons in your arsenal makes them strategic points to contest. These allow you to deal more damage, and need to be taken over, however they come at a risk, one being you can no longer move after firing, meaning you cannot retreat back to a safe space where you can take cover.
Even worse is that if you do take damage and the weapon is destroyed, it will blow up dealing increased damage to your worm, making them very much a double edged sword that make the level feel more fresh.
Adding to this is the new addition of vehicles that can be used in each stage. We have the large and terrifying tank, which can move around the level with ease, and shooting out 4 cannon blasts at a time, easily killing multiple worms in a single attack. Though again more downsides come with the fact that you are now a much larger target to be attacked, again blowing up afterword’s which can cause more damage to your teammates then good. Helicopters are also here, allowing you to take to the sky’s and rain a torrent of machine gun fire to the ground.
Whilst not as much damage is being dealt here when compared to the tank, what it makes up for is in mobility, allowing you to go anywhere in the map, and easily target a single worm for bullet death.
Though again making you a much easier target, and having lower health than the tank makes it a dangerous prospect to use.
Once you have finished using over 80 weapons in the game, you would think you’re ready to master them. Don’t worry, worms have your back, adding a crafting system where you can customise the weapons you want to use if you pick up the correct items falling from the sky.
Triple barrel shotgun? That’s okay, you use that to surprise your enemy, with 4 different crafting products;
- Boggy’s Special Sauce
- Sticky Donkey Paste
- Banana Bomb Seeds
- Tears of a Worm
Each can be needed to make your weapons better, stronger and more destruction inducing.
Now when your waiting for your friends to take their turn, you can use this time to dismantle the weapons you don’t want to use in your stockpile, and start crafting a new weapon from them. Though it does take time to craft weapons, you need to take this in mind as you will not be able to use them straight away, but the fun of playing with all the new weapons is all part of the fun.
Final check list for this game.
- Great controls
- Great weapons
- Great graphics
It ticks all 3, and from a fan of the original games this makes me VERY excited, I want this game to find a new fan base of players, or bring back old players, those who have been practising ninja rope swings since they were 8, and can do unearthly things bouncing across the map.
It’s disappointing that there is *pre order DLC, but it’s a small wound on a massive title, and even better its being sold for £20, on all systems. If you want a cheap game to play with friends for a few years, get this game, I have not been able to put it down yet, and when the online multiplayer opens up, I hope you will be ready to get destroyed ladies and gents. This game gets a lovely, 9/10 for being oh so near to the perfect worms game, only letting themselves down in regards to *pre order DLC.
*Team17 are offering the DLC for free for the first two weeks to anyone who buys it. Also, if someone has the pre-order DLC but someone else doesn’t and they play online together, then the person without it will still be able to access all the same weapons for that game e.g. Goat on a Rope.
