Yuri is a game that’s quite frankly one of the best 2D platformers you can buy on Nintendo Switch right now. From the minds of an indie team of two brothers, Yuri has legitimately amazing level design and will keep you entertained throughout its entirety.
Yuri is devoid of any real text-based story. Instead what we have here is a game that has an artistic flair that tells its story to players through visual cues. We’ve seen this kind of storytelling before with games like GRIS and Journey and Yuri probably takes inspiration from them. Players will start out controlling Yuri as he awakes from a dream. He stands upon his bed and his adventure immediately begins.
Players will control Yuri and his bed and will be able to move left and right. The face buttons on the right Joycon all make Yuri jump and that’s all there is to it. The gameplay is therefore extremely simple in terms of controls. Anyone can play Yuri and younger gamers will probably have lots of fun with the game as they explore the various levels thanks to the visually appealing art style.
Gameplay in Yuri, despite being extremely simple, is excellent. Players will control Yuri and have him adventure out into the world while avoiding dangerous obstacles such as giant bugs or pitfalls. The game is at its heart, a platformer. And a superb one at that. The level design in Yuri is some of the best I’ve seen in ages and there is never a moment in the entire game where players will not be in awe at the gorgeous art style and visuals on offer.
There are glowing lights to collect in levels and some of these are in locations which will have you wanting to go back just so that you can collect them all. Players can choose to replay a level whenever they want to from the menu and there are plenty of hidden secrets and passageways to find in the game to keep you coming back for more. A little bit more direction towards some of these would have been appreciated but alas, the developers opted not to do this.
Yuri’s visual presentation coupled with its level design is the game’s best feature. Some levels will have you jumping on frogs to cross rivers while others will have you floating between plants and drifting in the wind. Each level brings something new to the table in terms of the adventure and this is definitely a game that needs to be played to understand just how great it is.
The soundtrack used in Yuri is just as good too with background music and audio from the environments being implemented successfully throughout. Yuri doesn’t exactly talk but does blurt out a happy “Yuri!” when jumping every so often and this adds some whimsical charm to the game. There’s just something about the game’s presentation and aesthetic that hooks you, and even though there’s barely any real direction as to what’s happening or why an astronaut is out venturing in a dangerous world, the game keeps drawing you in further.
Overall, Yuri is a great indie title with level design that barely ever annoys or frustrates unless you’re specifically trying to collect all the lights. The game delivers a visual feast for the eyes and the aesthetic is gorgeous throughout. If you have a Nintendo Switch and you’re a fan of pure unadulterated 2D platformers that have heart, you should definitely purchase Yuri. It comes highly recommended from us
