There are many ways that you can experience a game. You can delight in the cartoonish characters of Super Mario Bros, get lost in concentration with a puzzle game, or delight in how realistic a game is. As technology has evolved, video games are getting more and more realistic.
While some games delight in being hyperreal or cartoonish, there is a trend toward making more mature and realistic-looking games. Monsters are much scarier, maps seem more daunting, and the action is more exciting. Some of the biggest games and franchises have photorealistic characters and supremely smooth graphics. Here are some of the more realistic games you’ll find.
Red Dead Redemption 2
The first Red Dead Redemption was a major hit and became one of the best-selling games ever. There were some lofty expectations for the 2nd installment, and it exceeded them with flying colors. The open world of Re Dead Redemption 2 was nothing short of epic. It was huge and packed to the brim with realistic-looking people, plants, buildings, and tools. That is truly what made it such a big seller in its own right.
The developers had several years to work on the game, and it’s obvious that they took great pains to pay attention to every detail. Everything looked and moved naturally, from flowers in fields to the clouds in the sky. When you stepped in a puddle, your boots got muddy, and when you spilled soup on yourself, the stain would stick around for a few days. Adding to the realistic element was the sound design, which made you believe a horse was neighing outside your window or a 6 shooter blasting through your door.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
There have been many Call of Duty games over the years. All of them aim for realistic visions of what it’s like to be at war. Black Ops Cold War looks at a particular top-secret team carrying out missions in the 1980s. This franchise has all you’d want in a war game, from superior action to CIA spooks to Cold War paranoia.
The graphics have been ramped up to 11 in this installment, with the obvious goal of getting players engaged in the virtual world around them. The scenery and lighting of the game will make you feel like you are right in the action. The characters are rendered beautifully, and their weapons are true to life.
Sniper Elite 5
The Sniper Elite franchise has followed the exploits of Karl Fairburne as he finds himself in various locales killing nazis. As opposed to action, the focus of the Sniper Elite games is to carry out your missions stealthily. The goal is to sneak in, kill your target, and then sneak out. Realism comes with how your enemies react when you see them or kill them. Some will be on guard duty smoking or even sleeping, and some will be wide awake. When they see you they react quickly, and your secret mission can become a melee very fast.
However, the true triumph of this franchise comes when you settle behind your sniper rifle to take a shot. The wind will affect your accuracy, and you can almost feel it blowing as you try to get the right sight. Your heart pounds and your breathing gets heavy, and what you see in your viewfinder adjusts and changes as a result. However, just like in real life, you can calm yourself down and take a shot. When that shot connects with its target it is a sight to behold. First of all, follow the bullet’s trajectory as it hurtles through the air toward its destination. Then, when it connects, you get an x-ray view as it enters the body and does incredible damage to your target’s insides. If you’ve got the stomach for it, it’s gory fun.
The Last Of Us Part Two
The first The Last Of Us game was a proverbial game changer. Its style and storytelling set the template for the gaming generation to come. The story about a hardened man, and a precocious (and hardened as well) girl traveling through post-apocalyptic America left us shaken, afraid, and hopeful. Part 2 continues this, and expands the world in which these characters live.
The graphics for Part Two were upgraded, which was truly terrifying. The monsters became scary and more grotesque, and the set design and world-building became even more haunting. They had real actors perform with motion capture, which only added to the realism, and made it feel like a movie, as opposed to a game. At the same time, the right graphics were smooth, and the characters and weapons moved and behaved as you would expect. The game was first developed for the PlayStation 4, and they weren’t even sure if the console could handle the graphics that they were developing. Luckily, they used every last bit of the PS4’s technical capabilities, pulling off a stunning feat.
Video games are a great way to escape into worlds that are not our own, but feel like it. There are new technologies coming down the pipe all the time that make games seem more realistic and engaging. For some, realism is too scary or intense. However, for others, realism is what brings us in and allows us to lose ourselves in gameplay. If you are looking for such an experience, try any one of these four games.
