Transformers Devastation is a fast paced action hack and slash game developed by Platinum Games and published by Activistion. The game is available for all platforms Xbox One, Playstation 4 and windows as well as the older generation consoles like Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Transformers Devistation is heavily based on the old generation cartoons of the early nineties making the game a real blast from the past and a nostalgic reminder of simpler times.
The story applies itself to this nostalgic vibe, Megatron and his decepticons are up to no good. He has found a way to something known as the Proudstar which he intends on using to turn earth into a new metal planet like Cybertron meaning the destruction of everything organic and non- important in his cold steely optics. It is up to Optimus prime and four of his Autobot companions- sideswipe, wheeljack, bumblebee and the almighty grimlock- to stop him. The story will not surprise you too much as it retains that basic good and bad struggle of decepticons wanting to smash things and obtain ultimate power and the autobots wanting to protect everything with equality for all. This is not terribly deep however it does not need to be as the motivation is clear and accessible for anyone to follow and is not part of the games main focus. Also, the characters stay true to their respective feel in the old generations and not like the colossal screw up with jazz in the Michael bay movies. In essence all you need to know for the game is its focus in the essence of “fight” in the “good fight” to enjoy this game.
The gameplay is probably one of the most fun-high speed, smooth intensively exciting hack and slash games I have probably ever played. Which should probably be no surprise when it comes to a game published by Platinum games. However fighting is just an aspect to the game as learning to dodge, effectively use both combos combining your robot form and vehicle form will only get you so far. As you progress you will level up parameters and obtain equipment that you can upgrade or “synthesis” to make another weapon better at the cost of another lower grade weapon. This system is incredibly simple and will not take you long to work out how to get the best kind of weapons for your fighting style. But, weapons are not the only thing that will change how you play as out of the five characters that you can use they each come with their own abilities and strengths and weaknesses. If you are looking for a quick hack and slash guy, sideswipes your man. With his ability to quickly phase across the map and chase any decepticons down that are trying to escape and slash them too pieces like a metal shredder with duel swords. Or if you just want a tank that tosses around enemies without giving a dam then Grimlock will happily oblige. As well as the basic story mode which will have you performing the basic hack and slash combat with other objectives such as chasing down targets, defending from defined and non-defined waves of enemies, boss battles and the occasional rail shooter segment there is a challenge mode. The challenge mode is just these segments isolated and enhanced in a way such as that there may be a few minutes brawling with a combination of megatron and shockwave or a twenty minute saga of machine crushing with numerous boss waves and smaller grunt based waves. In a way this maybe to the games disadvantage as fun as smashing everything to bits gets there is not really much that evolves further from this, even the acquisition of levels and equipment just means it is easier to break apart your enemies.
The sound fits the game like a giant metal shoe on its massive melodic power metal leg. With the sound done by Vince DiCola who also worked on the old transformer movie soundtrack it is probably no surprise that it plays on the nostalgia while still feeling incredibly modern. Obviously the very shiny original generation transformer aesthetic also compliments this however with the use of the original voice actors as well the whole experience feels like it comes directly out of the cartoon series itself.
Overall the game is an excellent way of updating a series and still keeping true to the original feel it installed to those who remember it fondly yet also making it more modern. If you liked the original series then this is a game you must play or even if you like an insanely high paced action intensive hack and slash gameplay style, which may get repetitive after a while but, there is just something about unleashing a flurry of blade strikes and then turning into a car and smashing straight into a skyscraper sized robot and knocking it to the ground that never quite gets old for me.
