In the last week of March, 132% more gaming apps were installed than in the same period last year. This growth is due to the Corona crisis, as can be seen in a new infographic on Kryptoszene.de. This means that immediately after the outbreak of the pandemic, more games were being played than previously.
On 21st March alone, 44.53 million mobile games were installed worldwide. In contrast, only 18.02 million mobile games were installed on the same day of the previous year. Overall, 75 percent more gaming apps were downloaded in the first three months of this year than in the first quarter of last year. Growth is also strong for entertainment applications such as streaming services – although at 55 percent, this is still behind the gaming industry.
There are geographical differences however: in Spain, the country with the second highest number of Covid-19 cases, gaming applications are in particularly high demand at the moment. On the Iberian Peninsula, 66 million gaming applications were installed one month after the 200th confirmed Corona case, compared to 43 million one month earlier.
While many industries are suffering from the corona crisis, the gaming industry is flourishing, as evidenced not least by rising share prices. While the German benchmark DAX index gained 10 percent in value in the monthly review, the market value of certain gaming companies grew by up to 21 percent in the same period.
“The Corona pandemic is giving an already high-growth industry a further boost,” says Kryptoszene analyst Raphael Lulay. “In particular, the fact that games seem to be more popular than streaming services ought to make investors sit up and take notice”.
