Few gaming experiences compare to dropping anchor on a quiet shore, leaving real-world stresses behind and building a peaceful life at your own pace. While the cozy simulation genre is undeniably crowded nowadays, every so often a title arrives that promises a rare blend of charm, polish, and genuine heart.
On paper, Starsand Island takes the beloved foundations of life sims—crop management, artisanal crafting and community building—and bathes them in a breathtaking, Studio Ghibli-inspired aesthetic. However, while the tropical atmosphere is undeniably endearing, its arrival on the Nintendo Switch 2 is severely hampered by frustrating technical flaws that drag down an otherwise lovely getaway.
Welcome to the Archipelago
The journey begins promisingly enough as your custom character steps off the ferry onto the sun-soaked sands of your childhood home; though alarm bells already began to ring when the arguably gorgeous intro cinematic clearly featured a stock player character rather than your custom one.
It’s a small criticism, but it’s the kind of small detail that would be obvious to most. Most titles these days focusing on a custom player character would compromise by either silhouetting them, using a first person perspective or simply rendering them in-engine. The fact this was missed was an indication of a lack of polish, and unfortunately this became a running theme.
Welcomed back by your childhood friend Solara, you’re handed an overgrown plot of coastal land and total freedom over how to spend your days. There are no impending cataclysms, strict deadlines, or corporate overlords dictating your routine; Starsand Island prioritises complete player autonomy.
Rather than locking you into a traditional farming-first routine, the game offers a rich array of career paths. Whether you want to focus on deep-sea marine biology, master the culinary arts, hunt for ancient relics, tailor custom clothing or become a master carpenter, the island provides a surprisingly versatile framework.
This level of autonomy also comes at a price, though; Starsand often feels very unfocused and lacks agency. There isn’t really a wider overarching story and you’re left to make your own fun through honing these skills and hanging out with residents.
Life, Love, and Leisure
Where the game attempts to captivate is through its community. Starsand Island is home to a diverse ensemble of townsfolk, complete with 14 romanceable candidates and multi-tiered friendship storylines. Interactions extend beyond simple dialogue boxes—you can invite villagers to stargaze, fly kites along the coast, or compete in seasonal mini-games together. I enjoyed this variety, though overall these romances aren’t anywhere near as deep as other similar titles.
When you feel like venturing beyond town borders, ancient ruins pepper the outer islets for light resource harvesting. Additionally, four-player online co-op allows you to invite friends to help decorate your estate or explore the archipelago; though this is disappointingly limited. Unfortunately, actually enjoying these systems means constantly fighting against the game’s underlying engine.
Switch 2 Performance: Rough Sailing in Paradise
While the game’s painterly art style looks stunning in static screenshots, in motion on Switch 2 hardware it is a very different story. For a title that relies so heavily on a relaxed, seamless vibe, the technical execution is surprisingly rough.
Instead of the smooth experience you would expect from Nintendo’s updated hardware, Starsand Island suffers from erratic frame pacing and a severe lack of visual flair. Walking through the main plaza when NPCs gather causes the frame rate to plunge, while dynamic weather effects—like torrential rainstorms—introduce jarring micro-stutters.
Load times between islets are unexpectedly long, and ambient lighting frequently glitches, resulting in harsh pop-in that shatters the cozy immersion. Before launch these issues made the game nigh unplayable, even in the heavily smudgy performance mode. Thankfully the recent update has helped, but it’s still honestly a mess.
Mechanics Clutter and Controls
These technical shortcomings extend into the moment-to-moment interaction. The sheer volume of crafting menus and career branches introduced in the opening hours feels poorly organized, leading to excessive menu-scrolling. To make matters worse, UI navigation on a controller feels unrefined. Placing small decorative objects on your farm’s exterior grid lacks precision, turning what should be a fun home-decorating session into an exercise in analogue stick wrestling.
The Verdict
Starsand Island has all the foundational ingredients of a cozy classic, boasting strong artistic vision and deep simulation systems. However, in its current state on Nintendo Switch 2, the experience is severely weighed down by poor optimization, unstable frame rates, and awkward UI controls.
There are also some fundamental flaws with the overall game design which arguably make it less engaging than the majority of it’s contemporaries. Until Seed Sparkle Lab rolls out significant performance patches to stabilize the frame rate and clean up the load times, this tropical trip is difficult to recommend at full price and even then may not be worth the bother.
