Snakebyte as a company have been around for a couple of decades, but its only in the last few years that they have really started making a name for themselves as the provider of some very interesting gaming products. They are a European game accessory maker some of their latest products include the Head:Set X Pro, Head:Set 4 Pro and the Twin:Charge X.
Before even opening the box you can see from the front of the box some key details about the product. Like that is has 50 mm drivers, Passive noise cancellation, 2 pairs of ear cups and in-line controls with pc splitter. So upon opening the box you find the headset, user manual, separate pair of ear cups and a pc splitter wire which enables you the ability of using this headset with the pc as well as the Xbox. It also comes equipt with a hook to stick to your Monitor/TV or shelf to hang your headset from when not in use.
So from the start this has already impressed me as for the bargain price of the headset you no longer need to worry about finding a safe place for your headset when you are not using it. Then there’s the interchangeable cups, I have seen headsets before that feature changeable ear covers but these often seem rather fiddly. With the X Pro however, the covers have a magnetised base that you can simply pull away from the headset and clip back into place making the switch simple. I did think at first think that this may be an issue when wearing the headset but the magnets are strong enough that they stay firmly in place, I even tested out this by using them on my phone listening to music and dancing around, and they still remained firmly in place after hours of bouncing around.
The only visible difference between the X and 4 models is the colour scheme, with the X unit its obviously sporting the green colour scheme of the Xbox whereas the 4 model is blue to mimic the PlayStations colours. This is a stereo headset that uses a standard 3.5 mm audio plug so it can be used on many devices including the Switch, mobile devices and even computers. It also includes a Y Splitter cable for use with a PC – one connection for audio, the other for mic support. There is no virtual surround, 5.1, or 7.1 surround sound option in this inexpensive unit.
Moving on to the audio, and it’s proving to be a big surprise for such a bargain priced headset, giving crystal clear sound across the spectrum, even the bass was more than expected, a nice middle of the range thud, that out does some more expensive headsets I’ve used. My previous headset choices have been the Turtle beach and latest one was the Afterglow lvl3 both of which I found the audio output to be great quality. I have now had a change in my findings as after using the X Pro headset I have found that the sound quality on these are much louder and clearer than my previous choices. The only issue I have had with them is the microphone’s sensitivity, upon researching online for solutions I have still been unable to rectify the sensitivity of the microphone to prevent it picking up on all sounds coming out of the headset and then echoing them back, this can become rather irritating for others playing online games with you.
The headset itself is extremely comfortable to wear, thanks to the memory foam filled ear cushions, and well padded headband. One thing I always look for in headset’s is the ear cushions and their size, compared to others I only have quite small ears so find most headsets to be too big on my ears and therefore tend to slip off my ears mid game or at the slightest movement of my head, the X Pro exceeds my expectations as it fits snugly around my ears. I myself prefer the leatherette cushions although I believe others will probably prefer the fabric cushions. The in-line controls are present, featuring a volume wheel and mute switch, the mute switch can be a little fiddly on times especially if you have chubby fingers like myself. The position of the controls is good compared to other headset brands I have used as it is positioned closer to the earpiece rather than closer to the controller.
The built-in microphone seems to sit at a weird angle away from your mouth but does have the capability of picking up your voice easily enough even with it being quite a distance away from your mouth when compared to some competitors headsets. It also tucks away nice and flush into the left earpiece which is something I have seen in some more expensive headsets, this is handy especially if you’re going to use the headset for multiple uses like myself as when not gaming I enjoy using it to sit out in the sun and listen to music on my phone or watch Netflix. The only thing I did expect but found doesn’t happen was that when the microphone is tucked away it switches voice audio off like some of the more expensive brands, but then when you consider the price you are paying for this nice affordable headset then I suppose the saying is correct “You get what you pay for” as I can imagine that having this feature in the headset would increase the price tag slightly.
The build of the headset is black plastic which seems to be of a decent thickness. The headband is expandable to allow adjustment for more comfort, just above each earpiece there is a sliding function which clicks at each adjustment level to a total of 5 clicks then the headset is completely expanded to its full potential. Each earpiece has a tilt and swivel feature where you can swivel the earpieces round to be flush against a flat surface which is handy when you’re storing your headset when not in use.
