So that’s about it for the first look, now let us look at the controller.
Nacon MG-X Pro Looks impressive
Ok, the first thing I noticed when using this alongside a genuine controller from Microsoft was the X, Y, A, and B buttons all felt great. There were not exactly the same shape and size but when depressing the buttons felt on par with each other. The analog sticks also gave the same amount of pressure when moving them, compared with the genuine controller. The D-Pad felt a little cheaper and was not as responsive which was a shame, as everything else including the shoulder buttons felt great to use.
Nacon MG-X Pro in use
So I set it up after a day of charging just to be sure it was fully charged up, chucked my Sansung S20 FE android phone, and launched up Xbox Game Pass for some cloud gaming. I played games like Halo Infinite, Forza 5, Hollow knight, Hades, Sea of Thieves and Doom Eternal.
Playing games on mobile does have its limitations and these come from your internet speed, from time to time if your speed is not there, you will see a screen refresh which is annoying, as during this period you can not play the game. Now, this has nothing to do with the controller because there is no lag between button press and on-screen action when everything is running well. But it does feel odd, Halo infinite really requires a bigger screen for me to really enjoy and experience the game, and playing with this controller on mobile, just felt underwhelming, again this has no relevance to how the controller performed.
The controller performed great, the only issue I had was the phone’s battery drained fast compared to when it was in general use, like browsing and using apps like Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp etc. So it would have been great if there was a way of charging the controller and the phone at the same time.
The phone sits really well in the controller, and never fell out, which is great as it would have been tragic if it had, breaking the phone’s screen is not something you want to do as the average cost of my screen is around £150, half the price of the phone on Amazon currently.
I was impressed, to say the least, and I got used to the design of the controller relatively fast, but getting used to mobile gaming is another issue. However, passing this controller to my youngest who is three, he got used to it right away and played the games he enjoys like Minecraft and anything he sees dad playing, but his attempts at playing those games end up, not so bright. Also passing the controller to other children, who are used to mobile gaming, also rather enjoyed the games I simply could not get used to. So I think it is down to how you enjoy gaming more… or how fast you can get used to it.
Nacon MG-X Pro Overall
Well it does the job of a controller with a mobile phone and allows you to enjoy Xbox Game Pass cloud gaming with limitations (Speed of connection) being one of them. I got about 18hours out of the controller before I needed to recharge it and I only recharged it overnight which is around 9hrs before I used it again and got around the same amount of running time. The lack of charging when playing to allow my playtime would have been beneficial but only beneficial when you are near a plug, but it would have been handy.
