Wyrmbyte developer created Dragons and Titans, free to play MOBA, for Facebook last years and recently the game has been ported to Steam. Riding a dragon, battling other players and killing their Titans could be fun if you are into MOBA gameplay. Zynga was a publisher and that was enough to avoid trying the game on Facebook for a year. Now, the non-browser version arrived and I am still not sure why, but I decided to have a go at a genre I am not a real fun of.
Two immortal Titans, Astarroth the Lord of Darkness and Hyperion the Lord of Light, have fought for a long time for rule over the Earth. To prevent them from destroying the world itself, a group of powerful mages decided to create the Titanβs Pact and caged them away. The one who is freed from its cage would have the right to rule for the next century, either as a good or evil. Dragon Riders are the only ones who can reach the floating Eternal Lands where Titans are waiting.
Playing through tutorial will teach you basics, though battling real players is way more difficult than fighting NPCs. Learning simple controls can be done within 15 minutes, and I strongly suggest paying attention to what has been said in a tutorial as there is no way to find out about controls later in game. The menu has only one option for it and that is turning right-click move on and off. Settings are too basic, even audio and video settings. That part could have been done better.
I soon became a Dragon Rider apparently and my skeletal friend looked fierce. Breathing fire on everything that moves was enjoyable, flying back to gold deposit in order to empty coins I gathered, then flying back to continue exploring the map was painful. Fortunately, I was gifted with a spell that could teleport me to the nearest deposit, but of course it uses Mana. Every weapon, including fire uses Mana, and knowing which one to use in a battle was crucial to win. As Dragons and Titans is MOBA I had to try PvP.
This meant teaming up with four other players, and getting killed a lot until I learnt few basic tricks. Two teams, each consisting of five players, battle on a level that is split into three lanes. Fast-paced and with real-time combat, the game got my interest for a while. We had to defeat NPC minions of enemies, such as bats, to get gold and level up our dragons and weapons. Next thing was to destroy the shield shrines and finally we got to attack the enemy Titan cage. Our Titan was free and we were victorious.
Once you get used to flying around on your dragon, it can actually be fun to battle the other team. Defeating minions isnβt challenging, all you have to do is burn them down with your breath and occasionally activate the secondary attack. As you level, more dragons and weapons will become available. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Some dragons are tougher, some are deadlier and some have what it seems the perfect combination of all skills. In game purchases lets you get a new dragon or a weapon for $3 to $6, which isnβt that expensive after all, and you can still use those free types and play the game without spending a real cash.
They all look all too similar to beasts that were described in this or that literature, film or myths legends. Chinese Wyrms is there, and so is Japanese koi dragon. I might be wrong, but one of these beasts looks much like Toruk from Avatar. Anyway, this is not a bad approach. Art concept based on known dragons is better, than if developers decided to design new ones that would look nothing like a dreaded creatures we are familiar with. One of the first few I got, called Dreadnaught I, was ugly and fat, and I kept thinking how is it possible that this one can fly as fast as any of those skeletal versions. Fearsome dragons are stunning, weapons look great as well, but the world itself leaves a lot to imagination. Although, this is a MOBA game and as such it has the most important aspects covered well. Audio and music could do with a little work. For example, when your dragon breaths fire, it doesnβt sound very destructive.
Dragons and Titans is a great game for Facebook, where most titles have a basic concept of grinding. Steam version has enough competition with Dota 2 and there is League of Legends which dominates the genre at the moment. That said, if you are into MOBA and keeping in mind that this one is free to play, you could give it a try.
