Revenge of the Titans for the PC, is published by Iceberg Interactive. Revenge of the Titans can be described as a tower defence game but this is selling it too short, as it is more than just a tower defence game. One of the most striking features of the game is its affinities to old PC strategy games; this is found through the refineries in which you must build to collect crystals. This feature can be seen as similar to C&C’s Tiberium. Revenge of the Titans has a very demanding game pace, large level sizes and a larger amount of enemies and enemy attack in which you are require repelling against using a wide range of weapons and upgrades. Revenge of the Titans is a newer, stylish game which has been honed for over 38 million years on beta, during this time there have been some major changes to the game play.
The controls for the game play are pretty basic; to make a selection you will left click on the mouse. If you wish to move around the map you have two choices of control you can either scroll around using your mouse or you can choose to use the WASD keys on the keyboard.The game itself starts up on the main menu in which you then have three different choices of game play to choose from these are as follows : Campaign in which you play through each level and work your way through Earth, Mars, the Moon, Saturn and Titan itself, protecting each planet from the Titans attacks. The campaign has 50 levels to work through in total. Then you have survival mode which offers an endurance event which is valid for as long as possible to stand against the oncoming hordes. Then we have the Endless option which is very similar to the campaign but it offers more choices and the levels are not as demanding as the Campaign.
For each level you complete there are more and more Titans appear. As the levels creep towards their end the apparent endless spew of chomping 2D horrors will eventually fade out. Losses on your side are inevitably and terribly heavy, although bonus cash earning medals which can be won if you’re one of those exquisite minds who have the imagination to build a wall of death so intense that nothing will ever break through your defences. One in a while throughout the game, I did hit upon initial set-ups which proved to be brutally effective. The game can seem to be fiercely cruel to its player, but this is mainly due to the openness of the maps and the build layout which masks quite how mathematically precise Revenge of the Titans in at heart. The levels come across as absolutely chaotic, open landscapes for the Titans to swarm across, but really they are filled with subtle choke points and knowing survival techniques.
Revenge of the Titans does not follow your typical genre of tower defence games, with the features of there being no defined lanes of attack, and that you actually get the choice of the technological path in which you want to follow.One of the games finest features is a ludicrously sprawling tech tree. After each level you will be given more upgrade options that will become available throughout your game play. There will also be more choices available of items in which you can choose to research, in order to progress further with each level.
When starting each level you have to choose which technology you wish to research, these choices vary from advanced blasters to barriers and many more. There is a good hinting system which will do its best to let you know what you will be required to research in order to complete the next level easily enough but it is entirely your choice if you choose to follow the in-game hints or follow your own instincts as to what you think you will benefit more from researching. There are alot of items that can be researched and you will find that they will achieve nothing other than unlocking more research facilities, but over time you will find that the more you research into the more you will learn about each individual enemy and how to repel against them. At one point in the game you are given the choice to choose to research a Capacitor or something that will be an immediate benefit, this is a tricky choice as if you choose to research the Capacitor then you will find yourself getting no improvement on that level but you will ultimately have the ability to completed the ghost level, where as if you chose the option of something more beneficial for the current level then you will find you will get more progress for that level but will not be able to progress past the ghost level.
Revenge of the Titans main focus seems to be based on retro minimalism, this means that it does mean that it will not be as rich in its visual variety as other contemporaries. Although the breadth of the strategy does grant a safe harbour from the grey reaper of rinse ‘n’ repeat boredom.Where a majority of the mainstream strategy games largely continue to work towards the Command and Conquer genre, and the main indie strategy seems to simply slap new graphics into the tower defence genre of games, Revenge of the Titans is doing completely its own thing.
Graphics/ Audio
Great retro design meets a terrific soundtrack, which is available to buy as an MP3 download. This combination makes the arcade-gamers heart beat faster every moment. The graphics of the game play are quite intricate with the detail of your defence mechanisms when attacked by the Titans, the explosions look extremely realistic. The sound track blends in nicely with the games theme and genre.
Overall
Overall I think the game is exceedingly enjoyable and I would personally recommend it to other players. Even if you think it just going to be another one of those Tower Defence games, then you might find that you actually enjoy it because it differs in so many ways. To begin with I thought the game was not very challenging but the further into the game play I got the more challenging it becomes, so if you do purchase this game don’t give up on the first few stages if you think it’s too easy as it will become more difficult in time.
