Aetheris from developer and publisher Wild Wits is an artistic take on a classic strategy and tactics game formula. If you’re a fan of turn-based games that require you to plan and strategize, Aetheris in Early Access will appeal to you.
As a tactical roguelite at its core, Aetheris is already shaping up to be a fantastic game. The art style is immediately recognizable and eye-catching. It is also teeming with detail with every single frame being filled with visual flair that draws you in. The gameplay is also fast paced despite being a turn-based tactical game.
In Aetheris, players will take on the role of a group of Vazzards that venture forth from their village. A terrifying encroaching darkness known as the Shade is hell bent on ending your life and you need to seek shelter from it and its monstrosities.
Aetheris features dynamic events. This means that no two runs through the game will be the same since you’ll encounter different foes and different in-game events. For example, in my first run, I ran into a Vazzard wanderer. I could then opt to save the wanderer or just leave him to die out in the Wilderness. I saved him and later on, he succumbed to his wounds but not before handing over some useful items.
The combat in Aetheris is rather addictive with a very fast paced tactical strategy turn-based system at work. Players will have a placement phase where they can move their units around on the hexagonal grid. A dice roll then occurs and the higher the number, the quicker your unit’s turn will arrive. Players will then be able to move their units around the grid and issue orders to attack or cast spells.
Enemies will respond in the same way and the battles play out as expected. The combat system is well rounded and enjoyable with a steady flow to battles. Players will however have to learn the intricacies of battling specific types of enemies as well using their own character’s skills to their advantage.
Upon defeating enemies, you will gain experience points which will level up each of your respective party members. You can then choose between two cards which unlock new skills or abilities and buffs for your character. There’s also a looting phase where you are rewarded for defeated foes and can obtain items.
Aetheris is a beautiful game with great mechanics and is definitely worth checking out right now. It’s still in Early Access but what I’ve played through so far has been incredibly enjoyable and the final release build seems like it will definitely deliver on its promises. This is a title to keep your eye on if you’re a fan of tactical strategy games with a focus on storytelling and enjoyable combat.
