Black Myth Wu Kong is a highly anticipated game for fans who enjoy skill-testing challenges and strategic thinking. When it was first revealed, its breathtaking visuals and promise of an action-packed, mythologically-rich experience set the gaming community ablaze with excitement along with plenty of controversy. Now, after spending a considerable amount of time with the game on the PS5, it’s time to dive deep into what Black Myth Wu Kong offers, from its gameplay mechanics to its narrative, and whether it lives up to the monumental expectations that have surrounded it.
Visuals and World-Building: A Mythical Wonderland
From the moment you first step into the world of Black Myth Wu Kong, it’s clear that the developers at Game Science have poured their hearts into crafting an environment that is as visually stunning as it is immersive, though pretty liner in design. The game runs as best as it can on the PS5, taking full advantage of the console’s hardware capabilities and its limitations. The graphics are great, with detailed character models, lush environments, and intricate enemy designs that bring the mythological world to life.
The world-building in Black Myth Wu Kong is deeply rooted in Chinese mythology, and it’s apparent in every aspect of the game. The environments, from the dense forests and misty mountains, feel alive with history and lore. The attention to detail is staggering, with every location telling a story of its own. The use of lighting and weather effects adds to the atmosphere, making each area feel unique and alive. The dynamic day-night cycle and weather changes are not just for show; they have tangible effects on gameplay, influencing enemy behaviour and the availability of certain paths or secrets.
Gameplay and Combat: A Dance of Skill and Strategy
Black Myth Wu Kong truly shines in its combat, which is both challenging and rewarding. The game draws inspiration from titles like Sekiro Shadows Die Twice and Dark Souls, but it brings its own unique twist to the formula. Combat in Black Myth Wu Kong is a blend of fluid martial arts, strategic use of abilities, and smart enemy encounters that require both precision and adaptability.
The game’s protagonist, Sun Wukong, has a wide range of abilities at his disposal, many of which are inspired by the legendary Monkey King’s mythological powers. From transforming into various creatures to wielding the iconic Ruyi Jingu Bang (the magical staff), the variety in combat is immense. Each ability feels impactful and can be upgraded to suit different playstyles. Whether you prefer to overpower your enemies with brute force, outmanoeuvre them with agility, or outsmart them with clever tactics, Black Myth Wu Kong offers plenty of options.
Boss battles are the highlights of the combat experience. Each boss is a formidable foe with its own unique set of attacks and patterns, often requiring multiple attempts to learn and overcome. These encounters are a true test of skill, demanding plenty of patience, but the satisfaction of finally taking down a challenging boss is bloody awesome. The game does an excellent job of making each victory feel earned, rather than handed to you.
However, Black Myth Wu Kong isn’t without its challenges. The difficulty can be punishing at times, particularly for those unfamiliar with the genre. There is a learning curve to mastering the combat system, and the game doesn’t hold your hand. While this will undoubtedly appeal to fans of challenging action games, it may be off-putting to more casual players. The absence of difficulty settings also means that everyone experiences the same level of challenge, for better or worse.
Narrative and Storytelling: A Myth Reimagined
Black Myth Wu Kong is based on the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West,” but it’s not a straightforward retelling. The game takes liberties with the source material, weaving its own narrative while staying true to the spirit of the original story. This approach allows for a fresh take on familiar characters and events, making the story engaging for both newcomers and those familiar with the myth.
The storytelling in Black Myth Wu Kong is heavily influenced by its mythological roots, blending fantastical elements with deep philosophical undertones. The narrative is delivered through a mix of cinematic cutscenes, in-game dialogue, and environmental storytelling. The game doesn’t shy away from exploring complex themes such as morality, identity, and the nature of power, all while maintaining the epic scope of Sun Wukong’s journey.
Voice acting and writing are top-notch, with each character feeling distinct and well-realized. The game’s use of Chinese voice actors adds authenticity to the experience, although there are subtitles available for those who don’t speak the language or you can choose a language more suitable to you, like English.
One of the standout aspects of the narrative is how it ties into the gameplay. Sun Wukong’s journey is not just a physical one but also a spiritual and moral quest. Choices made during the game, both in dialogue and in actions, can affect the outcome of certain events and the progression of Wukong’s character arc, this adds a layer of depth to the game.
Sound and Music: An Audio Feast
The sound design in Black Myth Wu Kong is as meticulously crafted as its visuals. The game’s soundtrack, composed of traditional Chinese instruments mixed with orchestral elements, perfectly complements the mythical atmosphere. The music swells during intense battles, driving home the epic nature of the encounters, and softens during exploration, allowing the beauty of the world to take centre stage.
Sound effects are equally impressive, from the clash of weapons to the rustle of leaves in the wind. Every sound feels intentional and adds to the overall immersion of the game. The voice acting, as mentioned earlier, is delivered with conviction and authenticity, further enhancing the narrative experience.
Technical Performance: A Mixed Bag
On the PS5, Black Myth Wu Kong generally performs admirably. The game takes full advantage of the console’s hardware, delivering a near-flawless visual experience with minimal loading times thanks to the SSD. The use of ray tracing and 4K resolution brings the world to life with incredible detail.
However, the game is not without its technical hiccups. Frame rate drops are noticeable during some of the more intense combat sequences, particularly when multiple enemies are on screen at once. While these drops don’t ruin the experience, they can be distracting, especially in a game that demands such precise timing in combat. There are also occasional bugs, such as enemies getting stuck in the environment or minor glitches in animations. These issues are relatively minor but do detract slightly from the overall experience.
The PS5 offers several performance options to choose from. Quality Mode aims for 30 FPS, which it maintains most of the time. Balance Mode reduces visual quality but targets up to 45 FPS, while Performance Mode further lowers visuals to strive for 60 FPS. If your display supports VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), this is the best option to enable smoother gameplay
Verdict: A Legendary Experience with Room for Improvement
Black Myth Wu Kong is an ambitious and captivating game that largely delivers on its promises. It’s a visually stunning, deeply challenging, and narratively rich experience that will appeal to fans of mythological tales and action-packed gameplay. The game’s combat system is a highlight, offering a blend of fluidity and strategy that makes every encounter feel significant. The world-building and storytelling are equally impressive, drawing players into a beautifully crafted world steeped in Chinese mythology.
However, the game’s steep difficulty curve and occasional technical issues may be a hurdle for some players. While these shortcomings don’t overshadow the game’s many strengths, they are worth noting for those considering diving into this mythological adventure.
