Not long now to wait until the full release of Call of Duty Black Ops 6, and just like that it was the end of the Beta weekend and we now have some time to reflect on the gameplay, mechanics and guns that will be part of the next instalment in the franchise.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and 3 didn’t offer the wow factor these last few years if anything I feel like it has put Call of Duty in a bit of an identity crisis with its silly skins for Operators, the failed reskin of DMZ for Zombies and above all the failed gun balancing that made it feel like there was only a number of guns that were actually viable to use due to the gunsmith and content creators making meta videos.
I know that we still might have this issue in Call of Duty Black Ops 6 because the gunsmith is making a return but I’m hoping that they don’t go overboard with attachments and make all the guns balanced enough to make the loot pool few varied and fresh each game, though saying that the Beta did have a lot of people using the SMG’s over all the other guns so it might be a sign of what’s to come but I will try and stay optimistic.
Weekend Two Goodes
The second weekend was more of a weekend one with a few small additions which I will cover below. The Omni-movement was still a challenge for me to try and get my head around and finding the right settings took a bit longer but I feel like I eventually got there. The addition of 10 levels for us to grind through was easily achieved and I got the Blueprint for the Assault Rifle and the other Operator Skin.
There were a few new weapons, perks and equipment for us to try out and the developers did a surprising thing and listened to the community and made some changes to balancing, gameplay and stats to make the Beta run a lot better. You could definitely feel that the movement felt better and the gunplay got some attention too with changes to the Weapon Swap Speeds, Weapons Adjustments a more. I’m hoping that this will continue into the full game of Call of Duty Black Ops 6 and the developers continue to improve and monitor the game to make it the best gameplay experience.
Matchmaking and lobby disbanding I feel needs addressing as it still seems to be an issue with SBMM and it was nice in the older games where you stayed with lobbies rather than being kicked and having to search for new ones every game. The Shotguns could use some TLC as I feel like they are incredibly unbalanced as you can shoot someone point blank range and they still survive.
The Omni-movement is a learning cover and I will probably spend some time in the full release in the training area to finesse this. Again, as I mentioned in last week’s coverage the Spawns need looking at as they are still wacked. But the core game of Call of Duty Black Ops 6 is excellent has some awesome equipment, load-outs and scorestreaks that I loved from previous games and one of the Field Upgrades (Sleeper Agent) was so fun to use and I can’t wait to use it in Search & Destroy maps as I think it will make for some crazy kill cams and clever plays.
If you didn’t manage to get into the first weekend of the Beta then you will get to level up through the full 3o levels. It might be a bit of a tight squeeze but with the help of double XP you might be able to get it done with time to spare. I luckily got a head start with the 20 levels so I managed to get to the max level with no issues. I can’t wait to see what other goodies will be available at launch and I’m so excited to see the return of round-based Zombies as I have missed it in the last few games.
Zombies have a fond place in my heart as I have many good memories of playing it after school/college and through university with friends and randoms. It hasn’t felt right for me in some time so here is to the rekindle of a dying flame. The Multiplayer does look like it is heading in the right direction and if Treyarch continue to provide what they have shown us over these last two weekends, then it will be safe to say that Call of Duty is back.
Conclusion
All in all, I’m happy with what I have played. I had this feeling with MW3’s Beta weekend but I do feel this time around that I’m hooklined and sinkered with the way Black Ops 6 feels and plays out. The maps that were on offer were incredible and felt like prime-era COD days and I can’t wait to see all the other maps on launch. The winner’s circle is a welcomed return and it is nice to have the Strike Playlists as the fast-paced small maps make for some intense gun fights and crazy noob tub shoots.
There wasn’t much of a grind this weekend for the players that played the previous one as the cap was raised from 20 to 30. We got another few goodies that were exclusive to the beta which will be nice to show off in the full game. The Beta has done its job at showing off what will be the next instalment in the Call of Duty series and I’m hoping that we get more than a year to enjoy it. It frustrates me at how quickly Call of Duty games come out and I want it to be the case where we can enjoy a game for at least three years minimum before releasing the next one.
Though here is to a new game and a return to what feels like old-time Call of Duty. Call of Duty Black Ops 6 drops on the 25th of October 2024 on the PlayStation 4 and 5, Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. It will also be available to Xbox Game Pass Subscribers on release day.
