DiscStorm is a brilliant game.
It seems biased that those are my first four words within this review but I picked this game up with absolutely no knowledge about it and was blown away by how epic and fun this game is. This is not some massive RPG or some huge action-adventure game. This is a simple arena battle game slammed head on with some epic Frisbee action.
There is not much about DiscStorm to talk about. There are two modes available, single player and multiplayer. The single player revolves around your character learning the mystical art of some strange fighting style involving Frisbees and violence. The whole single player has a wonderful light-hearted feel to it and makes the single player an almost the best part of the game. There are 10 levels including the tutorial. The levels are all similar, yet the rating system keeps you coming back to the levels to improve your rating. Higher ratings unlock more costumes and unlockable extras in the game for your character.
The multiplayer is likely where you’ll spend the most time. The multiplayer is local only which is a small shame but you’ll quickly forget how much you want to play with mates online when you’re all in the room together. Multiplayer can be with up to 4 people, and controllers are recommended to you. This game has the possibility of causing broken friendships very quickly as it can become very competitive. This will be where the main replay value of the game is. You can happily play this with friends and create drinking games upon it.
This game is utterly beautiful. It’s a simple built pixel art game build upon unity yet the best fun I’ve had in quite a while. This is not a technical game. Run. Throw Frisbees. Dodge. Pick up the Frisbees. Repeat ad infinitum. Yet the mechanic is built so beautifully with little features being given such love and care. This is down to the point where you can deflect Frisbees and pick up your Frisbees in mid-flight. All these mechanics can be honed and you can push up to a serious level of mad skill to annoy your friends by playing squash with a Frisbee off your friends face. The music in the game is also phenomenal. High paced electronica keeps your mind alive while throwing your Frisbees and sucks you in to the experience.
There is nothing inherently bad with this game. There’s no bugs I’ve encountered and the difficulty curve is well-paced enough so you won’t ever feel too swamped. You are going to die a fair amount, and this makes your rating go down slightly but checkpoints stop you from restarting from the beginning of each level. The only flaw I would say? The options menu is typically unity-esque. There are no options for anything bar resolution and volumes. This does become an annoyance after so many unity games but unless you are running a Game Boy as your PC you should run this fine.
499 words later this game is still a wonderful experience. This definitely gets a 5. If you want a war between you and your friends, this game will start it.
