The gaming industry has evolved in a big way since the birth of Space Invaders and the Atari in the 1970s, so it’s only to be expected that with our new technological capabilities it would continue to soar. Every year, Develop – an annual gaming conference – is held and the hottest topic recently has been virtual reality. We’ve all seen the clips online of people running into walls or falling over while wearing VR headsets, and they’re hilarious! Being able to get ‘inside’ a game and feel like a part of the situation you’re facing is both terrifying and exciting all at once!
The gaming industry is moving so quickly that it wouldn’t be surprising if you can go from games where you play slot games online, to wearing a virtual reality headset to play them as if you’re in the casino yourself. There’s no need to head off to Vegas if you can bring Vegas to your sofa, so what else can we expect from the online gaming industry in the future? It’s all happening right now, so it won’t be far off!
- Virtual Reality Groups. Imagine being able to get a group of friends together and fight off zombies in the latest VR game. This is the future of virtual reality gaming; where it’s more of a physical experience together than one just on a screen in front of you. Most VR games are a collaboration in the same space rather than solitary game time, so make it count and have far more fun!
- Augmented Reality. We’ve seen the success of games like Pokemon Go, where people could engage together by going out into the world and hunting Pokemon, going to Pokemon stops and battling just like they would on the old GameBoy games. Augmented reality games make the world a place that is far more fun, a lot less serious and it gives you a chance to get outside and be around other people with a common interest.
- Updated Consoles. Games consoles like XBOX and PlayStation are constantly changing to meet the growing demands. Unfortunately, PS4 games are still stuck between using physical discs and downloads as they require you to have both! Upgrading consoles is usually a slow business, as the tech behind them does take some time to develop. It’s a big change ahead that companies are updating consoles to be multimedia machines, and not just specific to the brand. The future is looking glorious for those companies that are developing consoles regularly!
- Indie Gaming. Colleges and workplaces all over the world have made gaming more than just a pastime, but a career. With the rise of indie gaming companies, there are now more apps and games available than ever before as people try to make their big break more obvious! These independent gaming studios are rising in popularity against the companies that have always been around, so watch out Sega!
Gaming is developing and evolving much like every other industry – keep current and don’t be left behind in an old reality!
